These days, trade CGs usually generate quite a lot of profit, because FD manually alter the demand statistics at the receiving station to max out the demand for the CG items. It usually means you can make several thousand credits per tonne, just from buying and selling the cargo; the CG payment afterwards is just an added bonus.
CGs always use the already-existing game mechanisms, rather than create special mechanisms for the CG. "Exploration" CGs like the one that just finished in PRE Gamma require you to sell data to the Universal Cartographics office. Bounty-hunting CGs require you to hand over bounty vouchers to the local security contact.
