Turrets are quite weaker and much more expensive. If you have a slow turning ship, that you can't keep at your target most of the time, then you might want to put some turrets on it, too. If your ship is a combat one, like a Vulture, FDL,.. then gimballed will be much more fun to use.

Gimbals are the most popular choice for players, you'll find them on most combat ships. Turrets are much less common, some traders use them but they're rare in combat and very expensive.

A Fixed Weapon fires forwards and can't move or aim. You aim it by pointing your nose at the target and pressing the firing stud. They're the cheapest and the most powerful, but also the hardest to use. The favoured choice for expert players.

A Gimballed Weapon works exactly like a Fixed one, only with a very useful Aim Assist feature. The gun swivels to track your target automatically, which is hugely useful - especially for newer players and for hunting fast moving targets. They're somewhat more expensive than Fixed, and used by most players.

A Turret Weapon rotates to track targets through a full 360 degree kill zone. It's totally AI operated and will aim and fire for itself. Turrets are very rare, they're extremely expensive and a lot less powerful than Gimbals or Fixed guns. Some Traders use them, but I've never seen one deployed in combat.

I've seen them used in combat. There was a good video a while back where a guy in an eagle (imp eagle possible) was actually using them to good effect.

If your ship can sustain their use, they can be quite good as long as they can hit their target, leaving you free to focus on evasive manouvers.

They DO have a convergence ability ie. fine aiming. Once you reach a certain aiming threshold, fixed weapons do a micro-autoaim to target modules of the ship.

I had no idea, thanks - do I have to trigger than fine aim manually, or is it automatic?

Its automatic. Kind of similar to CQC weapons but those have much higher aiming threshold, making them semi-gimballed rather than fixed.

I carry 2 large pulse turrets and 2 medium pulse turrets on my Anaconda together with some gimballed multicannons. Used them in PVP too, against Clippers and FDLs, I didn't lose or die yet.

OK, thank you.

Last week in the Mu Koji CGs, I was flying a Federal Dropship (only combat ship I had at the time). Previously I was using 2 gimballed pulse lasers and 3 gimballed multicannons. After some BHing in a RES and nearly getting killed by more maneuverable ships (the Anaconda has a better maneuverability rating than the FDS, LOL), I opted to change my loadout. As part of the change-up, I put two beam turrets on the ship in place of two gimballed pulse lasers. While they do less damage, it turned out to be IMMENSELY helpful because the turrets will track and fire at targets even when they are out of your view range (eg, above your ship), which is a life-saver when you're in a brick of a ship that can't turn to face your faster enemy.

Basically: turrets (can) do all the work for you, gimballed gives you a helping hand
