Enter key sometimes switches between windowed and full screen

As apparently some people think this is no longer happening and would rather shout "necro" than advise if there is a fix....

This happens to me sometimes too

Usually if I'm in galaxy map, I type a system name, hit enter and suddenly i'm in windowed mode, it it again I'm in fullscreen and it keeps going. when this happens I also cannot click the button next to the box to find the system, that won't work either.

I have to quit the galaxy map and reload it, and usually that won't work! It's basically a die roll... Sometimes I have to quit the game to get it to work again!


So now this isn't a necro can one of the oh so clever "thou shalt not necro brigade" who are usually the first to say on other threads "use the search" point to a solution? Becuase... Steam forum searches is not only one of the worst searches I've ever used (I often can't find my own thread even when I know the title) it usually brings up..... OLD POSTs! {Has the penny dropped yet?}

So how about people try and actually help people with problems rather than scream "necro" or "use search"? It's probably less effort than moaning!

And no I'm not hitting "alt enter" as those who insist on necro closures insist is the solution to a problem!

That is not an "exhasutive solution"!

So any solutions to this problem appreciated!

My problem is exactly like yours. In the map, type in system, hit enter, and boom windowed mode. But I have been going into options and changing it back .And do you mean this has been a problem that long and it has not been fixed??? Also, to hell with the word "necro" if it's an ongoing problem.

Yup a thread from April 2015 I think, it got a "you are hitting alt+enter" reply or two, which wasn't the case, then it got necrod and had more people shouting at the person that the thread had "run it's course" than trying to help!

IMO if the problem still stands the thread should too! Just like the constant necroing of the "linux" threads etc. It in fact makes sense from a troubleshooting point of view to have all the people having the issue on the same thread!

That "something" includes other input devices "simulating" key combinations including Alt. The problem indicates that the system thinks the Alt key is still down while you press Enter

Look what programs (besides Elite) are running, try disabling some of them. Maybe some of them are interfering with Elite.


As I understand it happens only after typing.

Are you running in borderless window mode or standard full screen?

Maybe try hook up another keyboard if you have one and see if the issue is still occurring? Perhaps you've got a sticky alt key and don't know it? Just a thought.

Well besides the fact that would just mean me having the problem wouldn't it? Oh and then there is the fact I'd always be getting wierd stuff... I've had enough keyboards to know when they are going wonky!

Nope I don't use Control or Alt for things, I hate control schemese that use command keys!

I've the same issue as of last week or so. Pressing Enter for chat changes screen to windowed mode. While not game breaking, it's still annoying. I've no other programs open in background, apart from Steam Friends tab. Still happens when it's closed.

It happens. My soluation is click ALT couple of times. Always fixed it for me

I don't run elite through steam and it happens to me so I can rule that out for you

Old threads should never be necrod for reason they tend to have outdated information that are only worth for that specific time which can be very confusing at times (not to even mention forget what you though or what others are written) and that can happen not to mention its annoying so its much better to make new thread fresh start with your personal details along with what you already tried and without any confusion and that's if there really isn't new one already.

As for the thread I think you talking about don't even dare bring that topic back he didn't just necro he also was completely lost that guy was looking for same problem on completely different game that is not Elite.

ALT+Enter is famous and popular shortcut on steam that can work for some games to change from fullscreen to window and backwards which is logical reason why some of us are drilling you about if you pressed it accidentely or not but in truth this might happen as well by using other combinations of keys (which there a alot) or if some program in background has its own shortcuts that interrupts game and forces it into window.
