Do I need the Commander Deluxe Edition?

How much am I going to miss out on if I just buy the base game?

Right now there are two out of the five* expansions in Horizons released, so depending on what you want to do probably not so much. The third one is aiming for a mid october release.

You should buy horizons. It comes with both. You will end up spending more money if you buy the base game only, because eventually you will want to do the stuff in horizons.

If the idea of ship launched fighters, landing on planets, and grinding your way to squeeze more performance out of your ships feels worth the price tag, get Horizons. Otherwise in my opinion it best be to wait until you have actually played the game for a while and deem it worth investing. The choice is up to you. Its not like you cant buy Horizons at a later date.

Do you know well enough this game to know you'll enjoy it? if so, read the horizons dlc page, does it sound interesting to you?

If your response is yes to both i'd say go for it, on top of ED and horizons you get a few skins.
If you want to know the game better first or consider that the expansion pass doesn't have yet much appeal then buy the base game first and consider horizons at a later date after you play for a bit. you might even wait for it to be discounted.

Horizons does not include the base game. the only vantage of getting the commander deluxe is for the same price as buying ED+Horizons separately, getting a few skins (Commander Pack)

The Deluxe edition comes with Horizons (worth the money) and the Commander Pack (which is some skins for a couple of ships in the game...not worth paying for but it's free).

The base game doesn't come with Horizons. When you're starting there's plenty to learn without Horizons but you will eventualy want it if you like the game.

In fact, when you first start out, Horizons may as well be called "oh goody, more ways to kill yourself"...but once you know what you're doing there's some good stuff in there. However, even if you buy it you don't have to use Horizons contact. You can even still run the base game without Horizons even if you own it and install it.

Yes, can be misleading.
Horizons doesn't come with the base game (any more... they changed it).
The Deluxe Edition does.

It's pretty straight forward now:
Elite Dangerous (base game) - only that
Horizons Season's Pass - only that
Deluxe Edition - Both plus a paint job package

It doesn't. It used to but people failed to comprehend the fact that if they already owned the base game they'd get a discount, so Frontier split the Season Pass out.
