Download size?
Anyone know how big a download the game is for a fresh install? Thinking of finally re-installing this but we have something of a prohibitive data cap (200GB of downloads and uploads per-month) so I'm trying to decide whether to do it this month or leave it til next.

17 gb

You most definitely shouldn't download it through Steam then since that would install roughly twice of what you really need, instead use the normal launcher available from Frontier directly. Installing only one "version" of the game (32 or 64bit) should be around 9–10GB.

Ah, so it does have that issue. That was going to be my next question. Experienced that with Warframe and Planetside 2 so well aware of that potential.

So, using the non-Steam launcher, what am I looking at for the download? 17GB or about 10?

I think it is around 8.5GB, but may I suggest you wait for the next update to be released. Otherwise you have to download again when it is.

It should be released some time soon this month.

Sadly, some internet providers have a monopoly over the areas they provide internet to. As a result they can do just about what ever they want, and consumers can't do ♥♥♥♥ about it. :(

Like how comcast is now imposing a 1TB data cap on all home internet plans and costs an extra $50 bucks a month to remove the cap. And if you go over that Data Cap, You pay an extra 10$ for every 50GB over.

Biggest contributor is that I'm in Australia (the land of lethal-yet-adorable wildlife and overpriced internet) and the plan is a combination internet-and-landline-phone plan. I've no idea if my ISP or any others offer better deals in our area but it does mean I have to manage my internet usage a bit.

Needless to say; I don't use Netflix. :P

Fortunately, we don't pay extra if we go over that cap; we just get throttled back to dial-up speeds. And, twice a year, we can get an extra 200GB added to the month for free. We've already used it once this year, though, and we'd rather leave the second one til November at the earliest.

I also didn't realise the new update was that close - I knew it'd been in beta for a while (still subscribed to the ED newsletter) but wasn't sure when it was actually dropping. Next month it is, then.

If you use the launcher directly instead of steam to play elite dangerous you can install only what you are going to play, and the updates are smaller than a full game.
Steam forces the complete package installation.

If you use the launcher for the game you have these options:

Elite Dangerous [32-BIT]
Elite Dangerous [64-BIT]
Elite Dangerous Horizons [64-BIT] (only if you own horizons)
Elite Dangerous Arena [64-BIT]
Single Player Combat Training
(if you have beta access)
Elite Dangerous Horizons - Guardians BETA [2.2 - 64 BIT]
Elite Dangerous - Passangers BETA [1.7 - 32 BIT]
Elite Dangerous - Passangers BETA [1.7 - 64 BIT]

If you install the 32 Bit Elite Dangerous you can only play the 32 bit version
If you install the 64 Bit Elite Dangerous you'll be able to play all 64BIT versions (horizons if you have the expansion)
BETA versions have separate installs altogether and it has frequent updates that vary in size.

Each one (32 / 64 / beta) has a 8.5ish (at least last time i checked) footprint. Steam forces the install of every version you purchased (except beta because steam doesn't sell or control the installation of beta, frontier does) so through steam it installs both 32 and 64 bit versions thus the 17GBish install.
Soon there is going to be a update to 2.2 (beta going final) and the update might or might not be of size because it has a lot of improvements client side.

Ahk, cool; that's really helpful. I'd actually forgotten that the launcher kept stuff separate like that. 8.5GB or so is still a little big to download but if I hold off on anything big I should be right to get it in a few days or so.

Might still wait til after 2.2 drops, though, just to save downloading it separately.

Thanks for the clarification!

Count yourself lucky to have 200gb. I'm stuck using my smart phone for tethered internet. 25gb a month and I pay out the ass for it.
If I need to download anything, I go to my sister's house.
