Honesty is the best policy ;)
I got a moderate bump in optimal mass, and increased fuel per jump as my secondary effect.
It actually IS a pretty bad roll, it's only about a 25% increase. I see people claiming a 50% increase...I've never seen a roll anywhere near that. 25% is about the best I've managed, but I usually only do about 4-6 rolls because I'm not really grinding engineer mods. I suppose if I collected a ton of materials and spent some time rerolling I could do better, and maybe I will at some point but 20 LY was "good enough" for what I needed. I'll probably revisit the FSD mods after 2.2 drops and all the bugs shake out.
my unmodded FSD range was 15.93 fully loaded so from 16 to 21 isn't that impressive.
edit: the FSD on my cutter has +47.5% on optimal mass and +6.3% on max fuel per jump. Although a better roll is technically possible, it's about as good as it gets. I get just under 21 LY fully loaded with about 650 tons of cargo, full guns, shields, boosters, etc.
It all boils down to, pardon the pun, the roll of the dice to see how good your increase is. Secondary effects can help, but also hinder.
At the end of the day, surely any increase would be better than the base range you have now?
..and since you can get everything you need (except one component you can buy about 120 LY away) through mission rewards why not? Just don't go out there in open because there's a certain ganker that likes to hang out there and kill people coming to do upgrades, especially ones who aren't built for a fight...cause he combat logs if you actually put up a fight.
he got me once because I forgot I was in open and didn't even think i was fighting a player until after I was dead...because like I said, I didn't realize I was in open...and saw him a second time, but logged out and switched modes before he could get to me on another occasion (keep forgetting to switch modes).
I've also found tons of posts about this particular player...going to popular places and killing easy targets is kind of his thing...and the youtubes are full of videos of him combat logging.
I think it's frowned upon, and there's certainly combat-logging shaming in the forums but I don't know if they actually DO anything about it. I think they've even done a galnet article promoting the group he belongs to.

Section - making a complaint
If you believe that another player is doing something contrary to the rules then you have to put in a report. Otherwise, who's going to know except you. Then it's up to Frontier to deal with.
Now I believe the OP was talking about jump ranges and the benefits thereof?
I vote yes, there's a benefit.
