Controls: Keyboard, Xbox Controller or Joystick?
What's recommended for elite dangerous? Forums say keyboard and mouse are not recommended. I have an Xbox gamepad but I wouldn't want to buy a Joystick necessarily. Any advice you can give?

Xbox-Controller (with some bindings on the kb, too) works fine for me (after redefining some bindings). ;)

KB and mouse is okay, so long as you can adapt fast.

You can use gamepad with not much issue, but stick is best I reckon.

Mouse seems best for fixed weapons. HOTAS seems best for overall flight control experience. XBOX controller is functional, but after using the other two methods it would be my last option.

XB controller works a treat for me. I did try my full HOTAS but it was overkill for this particular game. Tried mouse and keyboard and I was awful with that, but loads of people do use it to good effect.

xbox one controller + keyboard for ALT/F4 hacks

it gives you infinite ammo in the middle of a battle

None of the above.

2 joysticks, and home made IR headtracking.

First choice: Joystick +Throttle or left handed Joystick

If you only have an xbox controller i would go for KB/Mouse and have secondary bindings set to the gamepad. This way you can switch whenever you need. Some ships like fighters are much more comfortable flying with a controller and the SRV.... well when my controller is connected its my first choice on the ground :-)
I have PS3 controller that works as a Xbox controller, and a logitech 3d. I started out with my controller, tried later with the joystick, went back to the controller.
I have in theory more buttons on the stick, but i use a single modifier button for secondary commands.

I think its nicer to have a gamepad because you also spend quite some time in menus, and you have 2 x 2 axis which helps in space. I wouldnt get a joystick just for this game.

but reading up on this, Im tempted to plug in my stick, see how it goes ;)

if you're in vr, I personally recommend using a stick with voice attack. otherwise, it doesn't really matter. supposedly kb/m is the ultimate for PVP, but the best players I personally know use sticks, so I think the advantage gap is pretty small.

I have considered Voice attack or a free alternative just to try (especially seeing some voice packs which are very awesome) but in the end I dont find the need. In VR you have headlook which takes off an entire control stick + modifier. Besides changing weapon groups (out of sheer laziness, I have been in and out of the game, and havent done much combat since passenger missions got lucrative)I have everything mapped and memorized on my Xpad.

And while I cant comment on it, I find it simply super counterintuitive to use KB+M on a flight sim type game. Aiming manually with no gimbals is on the harder side though, admittedly.

I mean, I wouldnt spend extra money on a niche peripheral (most people end up not using their flightsticks, plenty to be had second hand for cheap near mint) for a niche gamemode / playstyle like PvP
