Easter egg?
So I'm reading about stars near our galactic center in real life and came across S2, a real star being observed as it orbits the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy to measure the properties of the black hole and the contents of the space around it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S2_(star)

There are 4 other stars known to orbit Sag A* at very close orbits but Source 2 was the first one to be discovered.

So, being curious to see if they were included in Elite, I type in a few different names for them and when I entered 'SOURCE 2' the camera shifted to Sagittarius A* itself?

What happened to Source 2, FDev?!
What did you do to it!?
You monsters!

Sag A* got hungry?..

I think it's modeled as the nearest star within the Sagittarius A* system, but not named Source 2.

Note that Sagittarius A* is not a confirmed Supermassive Black Hole, Sagittarius A* Is just the name given to a strong radio signal emanating from the galactic core. The theory of the Supermassive Black Hole comes from the star(s) in question, and how they orbit, yet there is no visibly observable body of mass that should be creating that much gravity.

We're only 99.999999999999% sure it's a supermassive black hole, but as with anything in science, Nothing is ever proven until it's disproven, in which case someone was proven wrong.

I know that I personally saw a thing on Science about a planet called Wasp 12 and decided to look it up here too. I found a star with the same name; thing about the planet of the same name was that it ridiculously close the host star. I flew to the system and yes...it was actually there. So, I'm willing to bet that if your star/planet wasn't there then Frontier calculated its destruction already. I was surprised my planet was still there to be honest, but it was even closer than what Science had predicted. Now, I'm no rocket scientist, cosmologist, astronomist, or aerospace engineer, but if I were and could calculate the planet's descent towards the star, I'd be willing to bet that it was right where it should be given the years' progressions between modern observation and Elite's timeline.

1,000 years is really nothing in terms of Galactic/Universal timescale, some planets don't even orbit their parent star once in that timeframe.

It also raises a lot of Light-speed related paradoxes, as in theory, nearly every star we see right now "could" already be dead, and there should be no Stars in Elite, since most stars are well over 1,000LY away and we wouldn't know they had gone "Poof" until then. Betelguese for example is expected to go Supernova in the next few million years, but that could literally be tomorrow and we wouldn't know for over 500 years.

Well it was just an attempt, a lame attempt admittedly, to explain a possibility in the missing celestial body lol

S2 is orbitting SagA* in-system. Go to SagA* and then open the system map and S2 will be there. I actually scooped fuel from it before heading off once.

You know, something that never gets any discussion in Elite is radiation.

I am assuming shields deal with it but currently I am in an unshielded AspX and heading to this exact location.

Now how am I supposed to survive the massive radiation this particular location generates?

Actually if we ever travel very far in space for real having shields isn’t optional simply because of the radiation.

So is there an official Elite Dangerousness explanation for this?

Oh and if Source 2 isn’t there I will let everyone know and see if I can figure out who misplaced it. 😀

Did you buy a shiny new spacesuit on a Frontier's store? If yes, then you will survive it - it will shield you! :)

Ahh sweet. And my suit matches my ship. We color coordinate. 😀

A lot of things are missing, like how do you explain you can "see" stars when you fly at 100c? Also you would fly "faster" than radiations...

But about radiations, what about a magnetic field around the ship? That would explain the light weight and the fact you don't see much lead plates around the ship.

Anyway, when i see you have to ride into neutron start jets to charge your FSD, while such jets would probably destroy the whole solar system if one of them was heading to us, then i guess there is probably a new discover in physics that allow us to forget about these issues ^^

Shhhh.......... we are not supposed to notice these things. Besides our ships all run on magic smoke so.......... maybe that's me..... not the ship..... oh well...

FD doesn't calculate that. Stellar Forge creates stellar objects based on known quantities of matter and gas distribution throughout the galaxy. It can be fairly accurate but many times is way off the mark.

For instance there are thousands of unary, binary and trinary stars with no planets. We know from astronomy that in 99% of cases stars have a planetary system. Way more often than ED lends credence to. Also I've seen planets with impossibly hot termperatures yielding materials that have melting points far below the ambient termperature of the planet. I've also seen planetary systems that simply cannot exist due to the Roche limit. I've seen moons that pass through rings of their parent planet, etc. I've seen planets so close to their star that in real life they would already be being pulled apart due to gravity as well as becoming plasma due to the temperatures involved. Also based on the real star data that has be added to ED by hand we can see that the generated data is much less dense in nature. Our Milky Way is probably 2 or 3 times denser than what ED portrays. I suspect the max amount of star systems in ED is (2^32) - 1 or the max value of an unsigned int. It could be (2^64) - 1 or max value of an unsigned int 64 but everyone says 4 billion or so and that would line up with (2^32)-1 since 2^64 would be (2^64) - 1 or 4,294,967,295 squared.

So while its a fun simulation I wouldn't exactly call it accurate. We still don't see accretion disks and other real life anomalies in the game yet.

We call magic what we don't understand, i guess a lot of medieval peasants would have called a plane a "magical device", also we were burning epileptic people because they were possessed :steammocking:

Even if i am really doubtful about it, some studies have theorized there could be a way to travel faster than light. In my opinion, there is about 0.000001% chance it would be true, though if something like an Alcubierre drive should ever exist, i really can't imagine what you would feel travelling in such ship :KSad:

Elite 1 and 2 were not so far from reality, but it would not have been possible to translate this into a multiplayer game. So i guess either you got realistic physics, either multiplayer.

My own opinion is that E:D would have been better as a solo game :cgpout:

Alcubierre drive
You manipulate space-time and actualy not traver faster than light.
