Permits
Every now and then I do something that results in me being issued a permit, I have just got one for PLX 695 or something. However, when I visited Sol it was just like any other solar system in the game, nothing of interest there, could only land on a few planets (not being able to land on the Moon seemed to be something of an oversight) and no special items for sale.

What is the point of these permits, and if I do trek over to PLX 695, is it there any merit in so doing?

Actually, Sol is among one of the very few handcrafted systems and includes stuff like the Voyager probes and a number of "actual" asteroids and dwarf planets. The moon and other bodies are intentionally permit-locked.

OK, I need to return to Sol. I did look at quite a lot of stuff then hot-footed it out when I saw a mission in some other backwater was about to expire!

Well, there is that. But I feel my character is an ingrate who rather treats a trip to Sol like we treat the offer of a holiday in Cradle of Civilisation, Iraq.

Sans the fake WMD claim that lead to it's current state i take it? Looking back at Iraq in the 1960s or 1970s, it would have definitely been worth a visit.

A new, young, technocratic elite was governing the country and the fast-growing economy brought prosperity and stability. Many Arabs outside Iraq considered it an example. However, the following decades would not be as favorable for the fledgling country.

Well, of course prior to that point, but then there were not as many bargain flights as now.

Some of the permit locations are specific to Elite Lore. For example... the capitals: Sol for the Federation.. Achenar for Empire. Alioth for Alliance. There are a few small advantages -plus the locations are cool if you look closely. Sol is our Solar system.. Achenar has Achenar 3... with silly gravity (6 times that on earth... try landing in a heavy ship). Alioth has a station which gives discount on Asp Explorer and the Orca.

But the rest of the fed/empire permits are a bit meh.

There's also a few independent systems out there with permits that give you access to exclusive goods. Like Crom - illegal narcotic called Crom Silver Fesh.

Lave has a planet that is permit locked by the Lave Radio guys... as they want to be able to introduce some lore at some point. Then there are the permit regions... like Col 70 Sector. Locked by our overlords.. incase we stumble upon the 'goids. :p

Ok thank you. I seems like this was an idea FD would have liked to expand upon at some point, i.e. there were some real tangibles from getting permits, but they did not have enough development time.

some of the systems have rare goods but for the most part they're just systems important to lore and PP.

some of the Alliance/independent systems also have rares but the permits are acquired differently. Instead of ranking up with the superpower you just need to get allied with the controlling faction of the permit locked system. Some systems are impossible to get permits for due to BGS lock.
There are huge areas of the galaxy outside the bubble that is permit locked and you can't get those permits. Some systems like polaris are permit locked too and there's no way to obtain these permits.

I agree, Sol isn't like any other solar system, its THE solar system. Also federation sucks so Sol sucks, if the Empire or Alliance was in Sol, it wouldn't be that bad.
