Question about Modules
Hey mates, short question about modules:

Sometimes i see modules like 3D, 3E, 3A etc., but sometimes they are like 1D, 1E, 1A or 2D, 2E and so on.

Now i know, that the letters say something about the quality of the module, A is better than E.

But what are those numbers? For what is this?

Thanks for help!

Have you already lokked at the wiki[elite-dangerous.wikia.com]? It's explained there pretty well.

Well, i did now, but can't find my answer there. They describe what those module classes (A-E) are, but not what those numbers say :(

the numbers are the size of those modules. if youre flying a sidewinder, all your modules will have a small size, since the ship cannot fit more than those, however in an anaconda you will see size 7 and 8 module slots, pretty much being the giants, like imagine an 8A sensor array or power distributor well over a hundred tons, and in the power distirbutor case well suited to provide the power capacity for a ship that size.

Ah, i see :) Thank you kindly CMDR :)

@OP:
I think you are confusing classes and ratings. The numbers denote the class, while the letters denote rating. Performance increases both with class and rating, but ships can only fit modules up to a certain class (i.e. size).

This is false, since the Sidewinder also has class 2 compartements.

- what i meant is, that a sidewinder is simply to small to fit "bigger size" modules so it does not have the slots for it due its limitations. i wasnt specifically referring to it only able to fit "1" modules. just for comparison and a ...rough explanation about the meaning behind the numbers.

my bad.

@ OP:
Never take a core module undersized, unless you know what you are doing.

There were a lot of people complaining "I cannot jump. It sais 'Not enough fuel'"... well. In the end it turns out they bought a new FSD, it was a better grade, but undersized. So they could not jump anywhere anymore. It's like if you fit a ferrari instead of a naturally aspirated V8 with a Golf GTI I4 Turbo engine. Yes, the GTI engine is nice, but undersized for the Ferrari....

The only reason to take undersized core internals is to save weight. So it's mostly only viable for an exploration ship... or maybe for some ships it makes sense to take a smaller powerplant since you don't need that much power.
