Pre-order cancelled. Without proper VR support, I cannot support F-Dev anymore...
I am tired of Frontier Development and their minimum viable products. These videos of VR users flying onto a planet, getting out of their ships, and standing in VR Theatre mode while playing in 2D are just simply pathetic.

I understand that they have other priorities. You have to squash bugs, adjust values, and polish the alpha to release the DLC on time - I get that. I'm not asking for a solution on release - I understand that the majority of users are on flat screens. But for me to throw another $40 at F-Dev, I need a solid commitment that VR gameplay will be a focus moving forward.

No "exploring" the idea. No "we'll consider. it." Commit to it, F-Dev. Otherwise that $40 is going to an indie VR dev who wants to innovate.

Edit: If you don't own VR, please do not share your opinions about VR. Idc why you don't have it or don't want it.

I imagine part of the problem would be mixing VR gun handling with flatscreen. If the game wasn't online then this could be done with a lot of work on the physics, which would work on motion controllers. A flatscreen vs VR user in a FPS shootout will put the VR player at a big disadvantage when it comes to lining up a shot, so it wouldn't mix well in that scenario.

I believe something could be setup, but I can't see them developing it, because they would have to develop all the VR interactive physics in their engine.

Will the 2D screen mode even render in stereoscopic 3D, like a VorpX immersive screen (I've played some third person games this way)?

Whatever, as someone who's done VR content for the past 5 years i can safely say ♥♥♥♥ VR for now until we get way better FOV's, elite was one of the worst VR titles since everything felt way too cramped with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ FOV of an index anyway.

Let's hope the next jump in vr comes in a couple years not 40.

PS. It's pretty obvious Elite's VR implementation is stuck in the age of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ rez headsets like the DK1, all the UI elements are absolutely too big for current VR hardware, only worsening the "cramped" feeling.

Cool, I'll buy some extra paint jobs and decals to make up for their loss of income.

I hit 300+ hours yesterday almost exclusively in VR and as much as I am dissapointed there "WONT BE VR AT LAUNCH" ... their will be VR soon enough. It would be very difficult to have a very interactive 3d environment that you can run around in be VR. I don't know of any VR games like that yet so it is not something they want to rush.
I bought a HP Reverb G2 so the movie screen effect would at least have high enough resolution so I wouldn't just be better off in 2d mode.
Plus it's just one aspect of the game, you still can play all the other stuff like normal and they will add new stuff in time and give you something to look forward too.

Problem is you're not providing feedback to Frontier by posting on Steam. They have zero presence here aside from posting news topics to the announcements section, none of which they stick around to interact with any of the resulting comments on.

If you want it to be seen by Frontier you really need to take it to the official forums.

There's nothing stupid about it. I can't see myself playing it on a monitor, and the legs don't really excite me, since the market it flooded with first person walky games covering multiple genres. In my opinion they're gambling on winning over a new audience. I don't wish ill for the game or its future, but it'll be a while before I put my money down for the DLC. I'll see what improvements they've made on the Space Sim and the planets etc later down the road.

That sounds exactly what I've been wanting to watch iTunes movies. Is that available to anyone or it's part of the actual ED game?
Unrelated to the overall topic, but I remember a program called Whirligig being good for watching movies and stuff in a VR headset instead of on the monitors. Also good for certain, uh, "adult" movies that *are* VR. I, uh, heard that from a "friend." Unsure how, or if you even can, use theater mode for non-game playing on Steam. For flat games there's usually an option under the game Properties in Steam, I think.

Related to the topic: as someone who has on the order of 600 hours in Elite, exclusively in VR, Frontier have had the premier VR game (surpassed only by Alyx according to friends who have played both) basically since it came out. Someone above mentioned a Star Wars game, I can only imagine Squadrons, that is equally as stunning in VR, but the gameplay isn't as in depth for obvious reasons (I would argue that's where it falls flat compared to Elite, not VR implementation).

That's a fancy way of saying I'm disappointed in their decision to not have Odyssey launch with VR, but I'm sure they want to take their time and do it right, which I think I can trust them to do. I, personally, would be satisfied with just using the MKB in VR; let me look around and maybe give me a free cursor controlled by the mouse for aiming; I'm really reconsidering picking up Odyssey on launch because of the transition from VR to flat. I don't like theater mode, and I would honestly be happier if they let us toggle VR on and off like MSFS does. I would much, much rather do that and just take the headset off for a bit. Hell, just render it on the main screen and have the HMD say "please remove your headset."

I would think launching with something basic like that would be doable, and if they're interested in adding motion controllers or something could follow, but c'est la vie.

Yes, it would be nice to have a full VR support for walking. But I have played a lot of FPS games on a flat screen, and I don't see that playing Odyssey like that will cause any problems.

Which VR headset you bought? I'm thinking on buying one too, but the Oculus requiring Facebook sign in puts me off :-/

If you can afford it, the Index is pretty amazing.
Pugs Apr 14, 2021 @ 11:26am
Index is incredible. If you don't want Facebook, keep an eye out for HTC's announcement next month 5/11 and 12, and keep an eye on DecaGear as they claim to be offering an Index alternative at less than half the price. It's still to be seen if they can deliver, but their first device (DecaGear on the hip) has received a monstrously positive reaction.

PUGS already knows about this, but for anyone else:

There’s a campaign asking for very basic access to 'VR Legs'. (IE a hacky backdoor to the VR view on foot, which EDVR veterans could possibly nudge into a playable experience).

The idea is that it could be some fan service that FDev could provide within their current VR plan and budget.

Drop by here if you’d like to know more :)

Allow the VR '2D screen' to be disabled?[forums.frontier.co.uk]
