what too look for:
1) high population in system
2) major faction at war (that is a faction with significant influence)
3) one or both factions allied with superpower
4) high intensity conflict zone
BTW you don't have to "take a beating". If you dont pick a side you can sit in a CZ as long as you want and just observe.
However if you want to fight the cap ship you will have to pick a side.
