What am I supposed to be doing to find "Encrypted Data Storage"?
Hi guys. I'm new to Elite Dangerous (well, I played a bit years ago, but I'm back now and basically fresh as can be) and I'm trying to complete two missions to retrieve encrypted data. The thing is, I have no idea what I actually need to be doing. I did a bit of research online and learned that I need to scan a Nav Beacon, which should update my mission with a more precise location.

I scanned the beacon in the system I need to search, but nothing changed. I get a message saying "Orbital Plane Established: 9 Bodies" but my mission summary isn't updated at all.

Am I supposed to just fly around and hope I stumble upon this thing, or am I misunderstanding what the Nav Beacon is telling me? Because it doesn't seem to have given me any useful information.

Thanks.

"Orbital Plane Established" is the message you get when you use the discovery scanner. Scanning the nav beacon means that you need to check in your navigation panel, it will list a "nav beacon" (or "navigation beacon", don't remember) very close to the main star. Go there, drop out of super cruise (do the same as going to a station) and there you'll find the nav beacon. Target it and look at it for a few seconds. There will be a spinning thingy in the target window (the bottom left part of the HUD) while the scan is ongoing.

I'm quite new too (playing a few weeks). These steps are correct but note you sometimes need to re-enter super cruise (after scanning the nav beacon) for it to appear in your transactions panel (under navigation). The game will give you a message that the system data has been downloaded once the nav beacon has been scanned, then just re-enter super cruise and it should appear in blue (meaning part of a current mission) in your transactions panel.

Go to a data trader.

I just gather data by scanning beacons on planetary station and then trade for what i need.

I use this list: http://ed.b101010.ru/aul/

Target it with the T key...It automatically scans within a certain distance...2 kilometers I believe, but it may be greater...

As far as I know, you always have to jump to supercruise again to view the downloaded data...

The Nav Beacon will only be in populated systems and will always be close to the star...Filter your system target list on the left panel for only 'signal sources'...It will make things easier...You will have to drop in on it like you do a station...

Should mention that the Nav Beacon is a wonderful place to get jumped by pirates if you are carrying cargo...High and Medium Security systems will throw a little help your way...Low and Anarchy...Watch your back...
