Elite Dangerous

Is the game's engine its biggest issue?
I heard that devs have a really bad time working with ED's engine, and that it's in fact so bad that making even small changes from our point of view can be extremely frustrating to them.

It's cause they lost the original Cobra engine team years ago to Unreal Engine headhunting after the Tencent stake buy-in. So the technical team has almost no firsthand knowledge of how Cobra works.

Yeah, it sucks, Unity, Unreal and Crytech are all headhunting any talented engine developers in an effort to completely do away with the idea of purpose-built engines and stick with these universal engines.

I will have to add to what he said since it is very important . Over the last 5 years there has been a focused effort to make purpose built engines as hard to develop as possible.

That said ... in the next pair of years or so there will be a 4th name to add to those 3.

Where did you get all that? That's the biggest load of nonsense I've ever read!
