Not sure it is even available yet at this stage in the alpha test.

I am talking about the main game.

Horizon engineers can be quickly "levelled" by just engineering random things.
For example, Felicity Farseer (the first engineer you unlock if memory serves) can be maxed out by performing a 100% complete 'Faster boot sequence' Tier 1 run, switching to a 'Increased range' and repeat.

The Tier 1 'rolls' are very cheap and can easily be replenished. Having said this, you may wish to perform a couple Tier 2 or 3 'rolls' too as that'll speed it up a little.

EDIT: I should also mention that you can also 'level' up an Engineer through an activity. For Felicity, it's selling exploration data to her (do the Roads to Riches for an hour or two and it should be enough). This way, you'll also make some credits too but will take a little longer.

Is there a way to upgrade a ship again and again and discard the upgrades i don't need? How can i do that? I don't want to fail and waste materials or lose my main upgrades.

Yes. Simply select a different thing to apply for engineering.
As I previously mentioned, the Tier 1 engineering options are your best bet to spam to level an engineer reputation with you. Tier 1 materials are typically raw materials you can find in abundance across the galaxy (iron, nickel, etc).

Having said this, Tier 4 to Tier 5 will probably be best achieved via a couple Tier 2 or 3 rolls. Tier 2 and 3 materials aren't too difficult to find either.

What you mean "don't want to fail"? Fail at what? Every upgrade is an actual upgrade, it makes your module "better" at specific stats, everything is clearly described right there when you click "generate modification".

Are you referring to the old engineering mechanic where you could actually get "worse" modifications? That no longer the case.

You upgrade individual modules, not your ship per-se.

The best way to level up engineers is usually by engineering a module up to the maximum level the particular engineer provides.
Just pick a module you want to upgrade, with a modification you actually want, like increased range FSD, then just click "Generate Modification" until next Grade is unlocked, select next grade, click "Generate Modification", keep going, until you reach Grade 5. That's it, you have an awesome FSD with increased range, and your engineer is now level 5, and you can pin blue print.

If you don't really want to upgrade any module at the point when unlocking the engineer, some engineers can be leveled up by selling exploration data, commodities, or bounties/combat vouchers. Is all described here: https://inara.cz/engineer/2/
Click on each engineer and it says "Reputation gain"
I don't know how much is needed for the reputation gains, I never bothered, always leveled up by upgrading modules, that's the whole reason I'm unlocking the engineer, even if is a stepping stone for the next engineer.

Again, you upgrade individual modules, and obviously apply upgrades you actually WANT, so not sure what you mean by "discard the upgrades i don't need", or "lose my main upgrades"

I mean fail the build of the ship.

you've to adjust your goals then you'll never fail again in life :D

Succeeding by lowering expectations.
"fail build of the ship" ??
you mean what if you didn't like your engineered modules?
Just try again, engineer a new set of modules with new set of blueprints and replace them on your ship.
You engineer individual modules, not the entire ship.
unlock all enginers 1 by 1 for all it take 3 months if you work well

The easiest way is to simply take an item you want to upgrade and upgrade it. For example, a MC for overcharge at Tod. By the time you reach rank 4 on upgrade, the engineer will be maxxed. So, not only you maxxed the engineer, but you also you'll have engineered an item, 2thargoids with one ship, or something. No need to grind several item or whatever, just straight up upgrade one.

If you want to know how many resources you need, I strongly suggest Inara. Set up an account there, and you can add a craft. It will tell you what you need, counting what you already have. The default value are pretty accurate for a 0rank engineer.
