Buy Odyssey on Steam or Frontier store?
I originally bought Elite with Horizons through Frontier store but I'm playing through Steam using the key they provided.
If I purchase it from the Frontier store will I be able to access the DLC and get a Steam key to play here?

I bought the regular Odyssey from Frontier, because I don't want to link my Steam account to it and to use Steam authentication to play it - it's another point of failure for logging in.

Currently I don't see any keys offered by Frontier for it to be used in Steam. Maybe because it's not out yet.

I presume that Odyssey will work just fine when I launch the game from Steam, even if I don't have it listed in my Steam library, as ultimately it's Frontier who unlocks DLCs to be used in game, and I have it in my Frontier account.

I reached out to support, I don't want to end up having issues so I better just ask.
The price on Steam is way lower than on Frontier store though, regional pricing.

Please, keep us informed on what they say.

Lucky you. Here the regional pricing is not in my favor. Frontier's one is even a bit cheaper than Steam's one. :)

I bought ED before it was on steam from frontier, I have bought all updates directly from frontier ever since and this one too.

I dont really see an upside to linking my ED account to steam tbh.

BTW you can always just run the ED.exe from the /dir if you want to not launch it though stream.

That's the privilege of those, who didn't purchase it on Steam after 2019. Another reason to buy directly from Frontier. :)

I see, well as much as I like steam I really dont like the whole "we're watching how much you play something" aspect of the trade. Tho I really like the steam overlay.

Well, I like Steam as a centralized launcher for my games. It's comfortable for a TV-chair use.

But if I have to use a third party account login, anyways, then I would rather login directly than adding Steam authentication login to the chain. Just this month Steam authentication had problems, and suddenly people couldn't login into their E:D games, while I could login without problems. I still used Steam to launch it, just not Steam authentication.

I got a reply back from the support team:

TL;DR:

Buying on Frontier store will give access to the DLC while running both the standalone launcher and Steam version.
Buying on Steam will only give access when using Steam login in the launcher.

They do not have currently any information on whenever they will be giving Steam keys just like it was with Horizons Season Pass purchased on their store.

Great to hear, thanks!

I got the season pass for horizons and no access

Horizons season has ended several years ago. Your Horizons season pass only grants you an access to Horizons development.

Odyssey is a new DLC, new development. The Horizons pass doesn't cover it.

Thanks, so that means if I bought the game originally on Steam before the login change, and still use Steam to update it, but don't launch it through Steam, I should buy the Odyssey DLC (Alpha) on the Frontier Store to have access to it now.
And to keep it updated with Steam, I have to wait until probably some time after release, when they give out Steam partner keys. Before that only the Frontier launcher will update Odyssey for me.

At least that is how I understand it. Is that correct?

I assume, you start the game through Steam as well. I did mention that I don't do that. As I understand it, if I buy it on Steam, I will have to start the game through Steam as well to access Odyssey, and won't be able to access it by just starting the launcher as usual.
Whereas if I buy from Frontier, it wont matter which way I start the game, I will be able to access it either way, but Steam will not be downloading the DLC files until I can get a key to activate it here.
