you may just need to custom bind it. (i do suggest that as the default binds are awful in my opinion)
And backup your keybinds because apparently resets are a thing.
as i said i have been playing for 2000 hours with a xbox pad.
but i have never managed to replicate this game needing to be restarted because it does not detect the controller.
when ever i forget to have my controller plugged in or as of now turned on as i have changed to wireless the game auto changes the binds to allow the controller to work.
but i see alot of people say the game cant do that.
so i wonder why it does not seem to work for some people. maybe a issue with windows or something.
I DO NEED to switch on my controller wired or wireless before loading the game or it wont work... Xbox controllers are native to windows so that may be why the work perfectly.

When the controller (or stick/etc) isn't detected for some* reason, the game 'defaults', seemingly overwriting keybinds/etc. Hence why some say to back up keybinds.
Restarting the game just gives the system another chance to enumerate devices/detect the controller. It's a bit like IT telling you to restart your PC to... get rid of your bad internet connection (i.e. make you wait a few minutes... oh.. internet is back up to normal speed).
All this depends on the system setup/configuration. If you got yours done to the point you never have this problem... you never will. Others who get one instance of this problem... unless they then change something, they always will get the problem eventually.
*like not waking up from power save mode, or not waking up fast enough. USB power saving mode/etc.
There are usable presets. I'm guessing the game isn't detecting your pad properly... Right click the game in Steam and go into properties. Disable the Steam controller input thingy and relaunch the game. You should be able to select a controller preset after that... Be aware though, default controls are generally pretty bad (haven't tried with a pad so it might be a bit better).
You can use the same key for many different controls depending on the context. You can also set modifier keys (like using shift or ctrl on your keyboard, but you can use almost any button as your "shift").
