Disappointment
So I have the odyssey dlc which is the price of a game, after having ED since launch, it have been my go to game since the start after I got the pox with eve online, it all ways been my first love as far as space games go, so when I found out I would be able to have space legs I was so excited, I paid to get the upgrades to my rig for the hotas x56, I paid aprox £250 for the x56 and another £100 for the mounts for my rig, as soon as it was downloaded I had issues from the get go, and because I thought that ED would have a couple of bugs to start, I waited for the first couple of patches to go by & boy am I disappointed, after patch 5 I still get the never ending apex taxi ride when near planets that are close to each other and really poor graphics, I am running a high end rig in 4K when im landing the planet textures are like minecraft block’s my FPS while in space is 120 ish but in station it drops to 50 then keeps dropping down to 35, this also happens on planets, the generic planet bases are really very generic and very sad looking, I have had a few fights with security and without fain the guns are super crap as base models, and because of the main issues im not willing to grind to lev 5 as there are sooooo many bugs and this is after patch 5 ? what happened to ED they don’t seem to care about the most popular game in space any more or am I missing something, what’s your experience ???

No you aren't missing anything. Same problem with myself and a friend. I actually was streaming Horizons on Twitch and never had a problem with it and loved it!!! Was super excited to be able to get boots on ground and nothing but issues. All we have paid for is to be beta testers for console players. Frontier have shot themselves in the foot doing this.

We streamed today after 6 weeks trying to play the last time and yes it was pretty and in the black it was good but didn't do any battles but the moment we hit the space stations it started to lag a bit. I noticed my frame rate drop quite badly but when we got to a conflict zone it was unplayable. We are very good playing FPS and was just not able to fight.

I'm so sorry that you spent so much money on your setup and got this garbage served up to you.

Thanks for your support, it’s not really the amount of money I spent, it’s the fact there are so many different issue that they seem not to care about, the planets are not as they are in horizons they seem to be bland and seem to repeat a Patten, space is super dark, every time I log in my hotas resets itself, the FPS is a joke going from 120+ to 25 is the lowest I have seen so far, from my perspective its like this has been made for consoles as a separate part of the game I just does not seem to integrate with the rest of ED, but not if there was a way to have your own base somewhere in the universe, then I could see the point but, for now ill be removing the hotas and extras and go back to sim racing, I even thought about getting star citizen even though I know that it will never be a full game and is full of bug’s it seems that it’s a better choice right now…

Regarding the issues:

Performance - FD are trying to improve it. They have to, otherwise the console release will be a disaster. I don't think they can afford another disaster after the PC launch.

Bugs - they are fixing them... slowly.

Planet generation - this is a problem area. FD are aware, they want to improve things, but they've stated its going to take some time (reading between the lines, it seems like they are not sure how to do it)

Super dark space - some lighting issues have been addressed and i'm sure others will be addressed through patches. Its one area FD do seem to be able to improve.

Star Citizen - well, that's up to you, but swapping one poor performing game full of bugs for another poor performing game full of bugs seems like a road to nowhere.

You also need to decide if you are fine giving money to a company that has spent every year since its launch lying to and misleading its players.

fair point :)

OP if you set the supersampling to .85 or lower, and enable CAS/sharpening ingame, as well as run at no more than "High" settings, you should be able to get the fps you want.
(you've not stated if you run VR, so i won't advise on that)

Running a resolution of 4K with a supersampling higher than 1.0 is asking for trouble, just saying. =)

Running most even semi-modern games in 4k is asking for trouble and I recommend against it in general. I'd recommend either actually playing in 1440p, or setting your supersampling down to the point where the internal render resolution is 1440p. (provided you aren't playing in VR.)

You can also just play in Horizons. It's like, right there, and all the best stuff (ie the stuff you do with your space ship) is in it.

With all that gear might i recommend Microsoft Flight Simulator? Can be quite therapeutic. My wife and I will often take 'trips' together in it. Its a gorgeous sim. I myself have steered away from Elite since the Odyssey fiasco, and I really love playing it in VR too.

Thanks space peoples, I run all my games in 4k well the ones which support it, I was made disabled with an accident at work, which buggered up my lungs so I cant go out and do the things I want any more so at the beginning of the pandemic I built a high end system, rift s and have no issues, running a ryzen 9/3900x water cooled, GTX 2080 ti xc ultra 12gb water cooled,2*360 corsair rads, 64gb ram Hyper x, twin pr25 pumps duel water cooling with an x570 crosshair viii hero WiFi ,2* nvme 1tb gen 4 ssd’s and triple 4k 43in screens and a 39in wide screen + tablet lol and I don’t have any issues running any other game with the same fps issues lol but i will take your advice with MS flight, i have been having a blast on DCS which is fun but its not space lol.

I don't think going for the Star Citizen is a good idea, as well ask for a refund (Odyssey), vote with your wallet, i will!
Odyssey should be removed from steam store imo.

I've heard a lot of *really* good things about MS Flight Simulator. Will be looking at that myself as well

As for Odyssey, and the frame rate in particular, I had zero trouble with it until after patch 4, and then it randomly started playing up. Very odd. When it's good it's very very good (IMHO) but when it's bad...!

You've come to the right place then. =)

You can play full VR in Odyssey without the gray border by quick-pressing "camera suite" then "free camera" (clickclick). Motion controllers work too.

Setting the slider in steamVR or your HMDHQ to 50%, along with setting supersampling to .85 or lower, while enabling AMDFX/CAS ingame, should give you the performance you want, while also allowing you to run in 4K.

cheers

Drop Super sampling to 0.65 and use CAS to upscale to 4K. You'll barely notice the difference graphically and should get around a 78% boost to your frame rate.

Every so often I drop by to see if the game is playable again. Sadly, it does not seem to be. Oh, well. Back I go to play other space sims.

Is this an AMD option for CAS/sharpening, I can't find it for the life of me.

Yeah....still best to play Horizons at this point. So sad to see that we have this awesome DLC just sitting there and all we've essentially done is paid to be beta testers. FD should never have gone full release until everything was completed. Developers never learn.
