Don't buy Odyssey, it will be free in time,
So yea, why buy any expansion when we will get it free eventually,,, that's because of the two fingers to people who paid for Horizon

Buy it if you want to play it when it's being released, and not wait for 5+ years for it, leaving it for others to claim all new discoveries added to the DLC.

Are you sure that you will even be able to play games in 5 years? It's a long time to wait. Life can take some drastic changes. That's why to buy it instead of waiting for it to become free.

If you're willing to wait several years, on the "chance" that it's also made free.
Horizons was made free maybe because Odyssey, also being a land-focused expansion, would interact with it.

Pretty good example - World of Warcraft. Every previous expansion become free as soon as new one comes out (every 1,5 years).

I imagine what WoW forums look like every 1.5 years!.. :)

There is literally NO guarantee that Odyssey will ever be free.

I suspect that the ONLY reason that they have folded down Horizons is because Odyssey is dependant on the planetary landings portion of Horizons and by folding down Horizons, players with just the base game aren't complaining that they have to buy one DLC to be able to buy a different DLC (there may even be trading standards case law making the practice illegal)

i would imagine that the ONLY time Odyssey will be folded down is if the next season after Odyssey is dependant on BOTH Horizons AND Odyssey

I honestly don't understand why people are so mad about Horizons being free after they paid for it. No one forced anyone to buy the DLC, and no one made any promises that it won't be free for those who didn't buy it. Those who bought it before it was free (me included) got what they paid for. I don't know why some people feel "cheated" by Frontier.

Are you seriously implying that you don't understand why people would rather play at release, and not 4 years later...

I'm not planning on buying Odyssey but only because I got a Lifetime Expansion Pass from Kickstarter.

i mean, i actually bought horizons together with the game, which was like a week before horizons became free (and horizon becoming free had already been announced, so i knew about it). why? because i honestly didn't give a ♥♥♥♥. i mean, it was only like 10 € or something. i'm not rich by any means, but that kind of money is definitely not a big investment for anyone who isn't literally homeless, in which case you'd have way bigger problems than buying games or dlc's on steam.

I doubt ED would be around in 5 years for it to go free.
ED is already starting to show its age with extremely limited gameplay.

Outside of the Bubble the game is essentially a flying photo simulator.

It was still around 4 years ago. And the gameplay only increased since then. It will increase even more with the next DLC. I see no reason to declare doom on the game in any foreseeable future.

That's because it had no competition.
When FCs came out - Activity spiked, and then dropped soon after.

Now for past year it is only averaging 9000 players on steam.
If Oddessy doesn't turn things around, it is going to be put out to pasture.

i think....this is common practice with online based games. They dont want to fragment the player base by creating three different instances of the game when they could merge the old expansions.

And how many there were the last year?
