Nice. Thanks!
There is at least 3 different fire modes for turreted weapons.
Certain weapons that have turreted version need human gunners (via multicrew) to act as turrets. These weapons will state this in their description/info when you go to buy them. It is primarily only applicable to special anti alien weapons (guardian based iirc) and a few others.
But that is balanced by more ToT and less PD draw.
Personally i use attack target mode. This ensures the turrets fire at the target i want to hit.
Unless you have a handicap, i'd strongly advice against them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmEmKAGYSwY&feature=emb_logo < these even tho the video explains why turrets "usualy" are a not as good pick, it also provides a lot of information on the subjectmatter :3
I get what he's saying, but this doesn't seem to contradict anything anyone here has said.
He says not to rely on them for 'primary' damage, but so far I've seen people saying that they use a few small hardpoints as turrets just to give coverage over the blind spots of the cumbersome large ships (condas/corvettes/cutters), while reserving the medium, large, and huge hitpoints for 'primary' damage.
Would you say that turrets are still not any good for that purpose?
I'm only just buying my anaconda now, and have no experience in large ships or with turrets.
I strongly disagree. While large turrets are usually not worthwhile fitting, mediums and small can be worth fitting, especially on larger ships.
Once you introduce engineering, then turrets are a great idea. Small hardpoints don't do that much damage, but as utility weapons they are great. A small high capacity corrosive MC is great as you can keep the debuff going without thinking about it or wasting it on a larger hardpoint (corrosive reduces DPS on the weapon). An efficient scramble spectrum pulse laser can provide moments of hilarity as the target randomly drops cargo or loses drive power. Dispersal field can interrupt NPC targetting.
I don't advocate using turrets exclusively (although i've done it and it works well), but they can be very useful if you choose them well.
The only weapon i don't recommend using turrets with at all is frag cannons, since they are only effective at very short range and will only fire at 500m or less. This means they are of most use on small agile ships, where normally turrets are not needed anyway. Cannons as well i'd caution against expect for small cannons, perhaps with long range (for shot speed) otherwise they rarely hit.
