At that point play the game itself - don't focus on the Advanced Combat Training tutorial. Come back to it after you have 30-40 hours. You need lots of muscle memory for the flight controls prior to being able to focus your brain on multiple targets in a scenario like that.
I respectfully disagree. As a combat pilot, I'd recommend OP re-do the tutorial a couple of times until they're familiar and then buy some guns and try it for real. Space truckers often struggle as combat pilots, they'll build up money and try to start with something expensive. And so miss all the vital lessons you learn flying Eagles and Vipers.
It's brutal, but that's no reason to shy away. Taking these painful lessons to heart will make you a better combat pilot; try to analyze why you're struggling. Find the weakpoints and change your tactics - as a repeatable scenario this tut is perfect for trying new things.
OP, the most important thing in Advanced Combat is power management. You'll notice you have three little vertical bars, labeled SYS, ENG and WEP. That's your power distributor, and it's vitally important that you use it.
Below each bar you have two dots. That represents how much power is going to each system. You can move these around with the D-Pad or arrowkeys, and strengthen or weaken each system as you need it.
Extra power to Engines makes you fast and more agile. Extra power to Weapons gives you more laser energy. Extra power to shields massively reduces incoming damage, making your shields survive longer. A good combat pilot is constantly shunting power around as needed.
Try putting all power into shields when you're in the firing line, this will mitigate most of the damage. Then put power into engines and get yourself into a Dominant Position - you don't need to be behind them, you just need to be away from their line of fire. These are Eagles, you won't easily get behind them. Once you're there, put everything into weapons and blast the target for as long as you can. If they boost-turn and face you, shields up. If they try to shake you with a turn, power-up your engines and pursue.
I tried it a week ago, and it's just two basic Eagles. It's rough for a new player, but any vet should get it on the first try without losing shields.
so basically it's fedev's nod to star treks no win scenario .
As do I. It's actually a fun scenario IMO - it's nicely balanced.
They're only, what, Competant?
Before you say something is impossible, make sure you know what you are talking about.
A year ago some new players had issues with this tutorial as well, so I went and did it. You can watch my first try here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cqmp0d2mhMA
Maybe you will learn something.
When I was new to the game, the "Advanced Combat Training" was what is now the "Incursion" in the challenge scenario section, so it was actually my first time doing this one. It is a lot easier now, and a lot less "Advanced". I guess its still difficult for someone who is still learning how to fly, but it should be a breeze for someone who has the basic controls down.
PS: Remember this is called "Advanced Combat Training" not "how to fly your ship for Rookies". Also, you dont need to finish it before starting the game, but if you want to get into combat, you should at least revisit it, once you had some practice piloting your ship. If you want to survive any real fight, you should be able to do this training with ease.
