Did surface scanners just disappear?
I looked up how all the new mining works and decided to grab a surface scanner, as that's necessary to find the good spots in and around planets. However, even using eddb.io, I'm not finding any surface scanners for sale near my location. I think it mainly has to do with the fact that eddb.io is going to be out of date for most locations since the major patch was so recent but I was wondering if folks knew what types of systems I should be going to in order to find these things.

Scanning was completely redesigned, you have a lot of keybindings to change :)

All ships now have exploration scanners fitted, and the DSS has be redesigned. On the whole it's a much better system, you can easily scan an entire system in a matter of moments from it's star, instead of having to faff about flying to each object for a DSS scan. The DSS itself now fires probes, and even identifies POIs from orbit.

What I'm asking is how to find one to buy. None of the stations I've been landing on have it for sale.
If you're Elite on anything Shinra has everything.
Otherwise I'd try high population High Tech systems or the eddb.io website.

Make sure you're searching for the right slot, it's an optional internal size 2. Then search for systems with all the other exploration stuff. That's how I found mine, after I wasted a bunch of time searching for it in the utility slot :3

Dammit, I even KNEW it was an optional internal slot yet still went looking for it while in the utility slot section. Ugh! Thanks, this is probably what my problem was!

Appreciated! I've already watched a couple videos on it... the new problem is how to fit literally all the stuff onto one ship. The Vulture can't even handle all the required supplies if I want both limpet types AND a shield.

If you want to mine, you'll want a cargo ship. Type-9 is a great one, but I used to mine in a Type-7 and a Python too. You really need those module slots.

Yeah I went in on a Type-7 but unfortunately it needs a size 2 hardpoint in order to launch seismic charges. They basically don't want newbies mining easily.

I thought that as well, but then I found the glorious.......KEELBACK! Though you might have to forego the shield generator for a decent build, it comes fully equipped with 2 size 1 hardpoints, 2 size 2 hardpoints, and all the optional internal spaces for your asteroid cracking needs!

I went with one of each mining tool and the lvl 3 prospector/lvl 3 collector combo. Feel free to tinker with the build - I'm not sure yet if it's better to prioritize the cargo space for additional limpets and potentially limit my prospecting speed (currently 64 space filled with limpets and I just drop em if I get full on those sweet minerals) , or to just opt for the biggest collector/prospectors and limit my space to ~30.

In my experience so far, this should be a decent primer:

1. Actually be in a hotspot once you've found it (there are guides to do this), then

2. Prospect only big rocks (don't know if small ones can be cracked but I've never found a crackable munchkin), and finally

3. Keep trying, set some reference points like the planet youre mining around or a nearby hotspot/signal source and try to be thorough, these rocks are rare and you dont wanna miss them cause they were floating behind a neighbor.

And keep those pesky Wanted CMDRs in mind as you don't wanna be randomly scanned by a wing with 10m worth of cargo in your hold don't ask how I know ;3

Which is exactly what I'm complaining about with the vulture :P

Unexplored systems have better asteroid rings, and no wanted commanders to worry about. And there are a couple of those deep within the bubble, it's worth seeking them out.
Actually I used to have an Asp Explorer rigged for mining, it was pretty decent and that definately has size 2 points.

I only mined when I was unlocking engineers, and used a Federal Gunship. They're a stout little thing, perfect for this role. They have more hardpoints than you could fly over.
