If you was playing solo, it wouldn't matter that much. But if there were other players in your instance, everybody would suffer because of it, cause the game uses a P2P networking to exchange everybody's positions.

Online and private groups use the same tech, its all p2p.

i somehow doubt that. the game has a server of sorts for logins and such, but i highly doubt its p2p or there would be a lot more topics on lag-switchers or just people with bad internet.

OP you should be fine, as the game is(more or less) run locally.

However, you might have slow updates when docking at stations / looking at boards etc.

As you don't state what you mean by high ping, it's a bit hard to tell. :)

And yes; the game does use p2p for some information; others are to the central server.

That's how such a lag looks (watch the Anaconda):

In a peer to peer game only the person with the bad connection suffers unless the netcode is so crap that it lets the person with the worst connection host the instance.

P2P is not about one player hosting an instance for others. It's about every player sharing their immediate data with other players by directly connecting to them. So, when one player has a bad lag, others suffer, too, cause their games lag with updating.

Luckily, it mostly affects supercruise, as you can see ships lagporting.

There is one exception where landing on planets will sometimes slow down your braking on descent, so that is a quite valid point to take note of.
(i play with some friends that have fairly low connection speeds)

Combat works quite well on the other hand. (bounty hunting in res's, etc)

All Commander <-> Commander stuff is P2P. There are servers for the background sim and markets, etc.
