Curiosity... Black Holes...
Hey, what does happen if you get too close to a black hole? Do they suck you in and blow you up.... like neutro star style? or oyu just hit an exclusion zone and walk out?

Nope, you get to close you get heat damage and then POOOF and your ship throws sparks and gets destroyed.

Last time i tried to come close to black hole i was stopped by invisible wall. I was about 26.6 km away from target.

oh ok, good to know, by the way i made it out alive.

If you fly really slow, you can get pretty deep, before you are stopped by the body exclusion zone. And then, when you turn back and supercruise away from it, you may see a very interesting visual effect of stars getting closer to you while the same time getting away from you. It's hard to explain in words, better to be seen. :)

Yeah, black holes are pretty harmless. I think they need a buff to make them more dangerous, like Neutron Stars can be. Tryin to think of ways to make them more dangerous/interesting, but we know so little about black holes, that little could be done that wasn't too science fictiony. I think the big one would be material theft by dense objects, but this wouldn't just be for Black holes, any close-orbiting stellar pair would be subject to mass transfer. But how do you implement it in the game, is it even possible in the engine, millions of questions and now I'm ranting.

Apart from the big one in Sag A (which, I'm told, heats you up before you can get too close to it), black holes are mostly harmless, You can bring your ship to within a km of the event horizon and it just sits there. Those thrusters must be putting out an awful lot of thrust to counter the near-lightspeed escape velocity.

I think it's a case of art trumping realism. They went to all the trouble of making awesome graphic effects of "what happens when you're near a black hole". It would be a shame to waste it if no-one ever saw those effects because your ship blew up before you got that close.

It depends on how hot your ship build is. I've been inside that black hole in my Orca, down to the body exclusion zone. I had about 60% heat inside. But my Orca runs pretty cold.

yea they stop you, give you a cool lens distortion, thats about it.

Approach them head-on with FSD blue speed, when you are getting close (Mm distances), gradually cut speed to minimal. FSD will kick you once you reach exclusion zone.

Make sure your ship does not overheat while doing this. If heat remains OK, it also means you will likely be able to leave the black hole without overheating at all.

If unsure, it is highly advisable that you mount a heat sink launcher, that one will buy you enough time to correct the situation if heat goes bonkers.

Once out of FSD, just approach with regular flight, ship will stop moving once you get too close.
In your first tries, it is safer to do this with the smaller black holes.

Either the exclusion zone stops you or you go straight through it.

I have yet to experience that, do you know any black hole where I could try this?
They always stopped me so far..
I am always eager to toy around with these things :D

Don't remember the names, but I flew through a few black holes near colonia. There's probably info on some that you can fly through if you google, though idk.

Fair enough, I actually am on the way to Colonia (even if just doing so lazily, some jumps per day).. so I will definitely take a look into it.

It would be a cool mechanic if entering a black hole would spit you out somewhere random in the galaxy :)

Well, anything other than getting blown up seems to be cool with me...

We have that option... or the Interstellar way...
