I need some [Consumer Electronics] ??? (sorry I'm new)
I chose a mission to give some of this. But I don't have any, is there any sort of trade knowledge in game? How do I find good stations or is it just luck to come across places that sell specific items?

1) Galaxy map
2) Buy trade data on the systems around you
3) Turn "show trades routes" on.
4) Go to the commodities filters again in the galaxy map and filter for only "Consumer Electronics" (it's probably in "Consumer Goods" or some similar sub-category).
5) Look for animated arrows/streams that show you where your CE are being transported.
6) Go to the source of the arrows and check out the stations, you should find what you need there.
7) Also, in the system map, click on a station and go to the second tab from the left, it lists imports and exports. Obviously look for one that exports CE.

If I didn't use external resources would it just be based on luck and what I've discovered? Feels like there should be a database in game, otherwise feels like cheating a bit right?

Also is that updated, or will certain stations always sell the same items?

I did play the training, but I feel like there's a lot that it doesn't explain (like how I can also get mining accessory fitted to my ship!__)

The trade data has a cooldown so I must have purchased it by accident? Or does it just refresh every so hours? I''ll log on later and check those routes, I found the blue lines but didn't know they had subsections, and then the game closed because the server was taking down :D

Some people feel that this should be in-game info, but I would rather (personally) that they put their efforts into features that can't be mimicked outside of the game.

If you have to do a research paper at a library, is using the internet cheating?

There is no direct in-game database. You can do what Jon suggests, but I prefer to use eddb, fi I need a specific product. You may find the game grindy, so I personally don't waste my time trying to find a product in-game, if I don't have to.

I don't know how they do it, but if you check it out, they know down to the minute the inventory of a station (or when it was last bought, at least). They disclaim that they are completely accurate, but I have never been disapointed.

As for changing their inventory, I don't know. I've never patronized one station long enough to notice.

As for out of game "cheating", there are plenty of YouTube videos that explain every aspect of the game, from how to do mining to how to supercharge your FSD. You can spend time in-game, trying to figure it out, but why bother?

I guess what I am getting at is this game has a VERY high learning curve. People who have spent 400 hours in the game still consider themselves beginners. You are going to be spending a lot of time potentially doing repetitive grindy stuff, so why not take advantage of everything at your disposal.

The game doesn't need to be played with external sources - it will help quite a bit though if you at least noticed the patterns and wrote them down - because there are so many. What i'm talking about is, for example: it's established that in certain types of systems you will very likely find certain types of goods. Take into account that the system may have a status that may come into play when it comes to availabilty of goods (famine and you want to buy foodstuff? not good).

If really interested in trading you may want to write down your initial finds after you visited a certain type of station for the first time - after a while you'll see patterns and if you are really into it there's a lot of potential profit in it (always buy low sell high, extraction goes to refinery, then to industrial not vice versa.. and so on)

Very true. Most games nowadays I end up consulting wiki's. Just because I want to experience the whole game, and without them you'd never find a lot of side quests or certain info. I'm not sure if game designers assume people will rely on wiki's or if they just expect people to play thousands of hours on a single game.

I don't want to grind, I'm in my final year of university and so I need to make the most of my game time!

Also I probably won't again accept a mission where I don't have that resource currently-I saw $$$ and thought "year there must be lots of that floating about" haha.

I'm enjoying it though, learning curve is steep though. I had to find a blackbox and it told me to head to a planet. I was flying INTO the planet when I noticed the ETA went into HOURS. I also think I flew into a sun (but I didn't explode). I hope when hyper drives become a reality they won't all try and throw you into the nearest sun!!

go for high-tech systems, perhaps.
generally you may read in Any of goods decriptions - in what kind of system you may expect to find it and then head to to buy some.
some elements or goods may b absent in some regions and due to lack of resources - temporally absent others, but generally basic understand "what kind of economics produce What" would help you enough.
same about consumption of the, impact of economical or policial state change in region or system and etc.

I think my problem was that I had only the basic jump drive and so I was limited to the near systems which none had the correct item. I upgraded and used EDDB and can travel to a lot more places :)

Hi Ebony, if you install ED market connector, it will update both EDDB and Inara, whenever you dock at a station. This is one of the ways that the inventories are kept up to date.
