Painite mining?
I need 10 tons of painite to unlock an engineer. I found a ring with a couple of painite hotspots, (not overlapping) but I haven't had much luck in finding any painite.
I've all the gear I need for laser mining and have been using a pulse wave and prospecting any bright rocks but in a straight line of almost 1000km I only found painite in 1 rock and it was a core asteroid. I was under the impression I wouldn't need seismic charges so I didn't fit a launcher (or subsurface) so I could keep a couple of guns. (cobra)
I've done a lot of core mining for opals and LTD's but this is my first time going after painite. Am I doing something wrong or just unlucky?

Sounds unlucky, but I got my painite for that unlock together with around 100 Million credits in accidental by-catch through core mining and that was in a hotspot for some other FotM mineral.

The big advantage of core mining is that you only need to get lucky once ;-)

What type of ring is it? Metal rich = cores, Metallic = laser mining . Don't waste power on pulse wave for laser mining , just spam prospectors.

Painite can also be mined via plain old laser mining, and painite-containing rocks do not necessarily show up on the pulse wave scanner. Equip a prospector limpet controller, fire it at nearby asteroids, and you won't have to search long before finding asteroids with 30% or more Painite if you're at a hotspot.

A great spot for Painite is the double Painite overlapping hotspot at Hyades Sector DB-X D1-112, in the rings around planet 2, or another double Painite hotspote in Hip 37222 planet 3 ring A.

You don't need the pulse-wave scanner is not necessary for Painite mining. If you're in a Painite hotspot, and you haven't found Painite - you're just not trying hard enough. It will take more than prospecting 3 asteroids and calling it a day.....

Feel free to friend me, I'd be happy to show you how its done. As a bonus, I'll even fill your hold!

Thanks for the info guys. I'll probably give it another try today and see if I have better luck. I'll check the ring type, but probably mount a seismic launcher either way since I know there's at least some core asteroids here.
I've been using prospectors, but have a limited number of them since I'm flying a cobra on this trip. I can only carry 34 limpets and only have enough materials to synth another 24 when they run out. If that's not enough I'll probably buy a Keelback for this operation and sell it when I'm done.

Thanks for the locations Kaaaarl. I'll look them up on the map, but unless they're within a few jumps it's probably not worth the trip for only 10 tons.
I'm not trying to make money with this, just unlock an engineer.

Thanks for the offer Pctehcnik. I don't play in open any more. I tried it quite a bit when I first started and eventually decided I didn't like getting blown up for no reason. If I did this would be a lot simpler as I could just offer to trade 50 tons of opals or LTD's for 10 tons of painite. (that stuff I can find easy)

Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions. Hopefully today goes better. :^)

It doesn't have to be in open... Got mobius or any other Private Group?

the pulse wave only shows rocks with sub surface and core deposits, it has nothing to do with what materials can be mined. you would be better off chipping off a chunk with a regular mining laser or launching prospectors

When I was running low on limpets I started just lasering rocks to see what broke off. Wasn't sure how much I'd have to take to get painite even if it was in the asteroid.
Finally got what I needed by finding a rock with a painite core.

Having done that, I definitly like void opals and LTD's better. Ice rings seem brighter and I know what I'm looking for. (not that I really need more money at this point) :^)

Appears the RNG gods just hate you. Keep at it. Be sure you're mining in Pristine Rings, and prospecting, that'll help.
