NPC crew is for ships with fighter hanger.
Wing missions are meant for multi-player in a wing but you can do it solo too.
The game does not differ between the game modes. It creates the same NPCs, same missions and other stuff. The only difference is who you can see and who can see you.
You can do wing missions completely on your own without problems... well... they take longer than normal missions usually.

Private group is basically open but without the chance of getting ganged because all of the other players have to have been invited to the group to play there
so private is better in a way..... can play with friends but not open to everyone and not alone so to say.
well not alone if everyone is on...
