Am I the only one who find mining hard to do?
I've got about 500 hrs in the game. Been mostly trading, and I wanted to try mining. I watched videos but it always seemed like they would leave out a step or 2. Do the youtubers not understand that if I'm watching their video, then I dont dont know how to do it? Anyway, i go to the triple hotspots and after 2-3 hours I've got about 10-12 low temp diamonds and other stuff. 12 million credits or so......where is the 200 million or 400 million?

What kind of mining? Core, laser, both? Which ship do you use?
Don't forget, they nerfed mining in 1 of the last patches.
The info might be out of date, but you're probably doing something wrong. If I had to guess, you just haven't learned how to spot the "Good" asteroids yet, and ignore the trash.

Good Asteroids show up BRIGHT yellow. It's hard to describe, but when you see the pattern, it becomes intuitive.

CORE asteroids always look the same, they kind of look like everlasting Gobstoppers from Willy Wonka, it's the best way I can describe them. They always have a uniform size and the same shape.

SUBSURFACE asteroids can be any shape, but are predominantly small potato like asteroids

I was doing laser mining with a type 9.

I found out the hard way not to get up and try another spot on the ring. Pirates got me cause I had picked up a few trituim.

There's your problem. You gotta learn how to Deepcore and Subsurface mine. That's where the money's at.

I suggest you "Downgrade" your T9 to a Python. The extra ship agility and speed will help you deep core mine easier. The T9 can deep core mine, but the learning curve is way higher and the tolerance for failure way lower because of time pressures in synchronizing the detonation sequence properly.

I got even lower profit than yours after my first trip about a week ago. Random low temp diamond hotspot, I got about 5 after 2 hours.

As a beginner miner, I choose painite. Yesterday, I mined in GCRV 1568 for 90 million in about 2 hours using an ASP Explorer. Cargo cap was 96 plus 6 from refinery. Selling price was about 900,000 per unit.
Equipment I use: 1 2D mining laser, abrasion blaster, seismic charge launcher, sub-surface displacement missile, detail surface scanner, pulse wave analyzer, 2 collector limpet controllers, 1 prospector limpet controller, 1 refinery with 6 bins and some cargo racks.

This is the steps I took:
- Use the miner's tool website to find systems with hot spots close to my current system and where to sell.
- Equip a detailed surface scanner to know the hot spot locations. GCRV 1568 has a triple hot spots.
- Super cruise into the middle between the hot spots where all 3 circle overlaps (higher chance for asteroids containing painite).
- Once I exited super cruise, scan using pulse wave analyzer, if something orange pops up, go to it. I repeat this step a lot.
- Fire a prospector limpet at the orange thing. Be sure to target the limpet as it flies out. The info will show up on lower left panel. If there is painite, go to the asteroid within mining laser range. I take all asteroids with painite, low or high content. Prospector limpets double amount of yield. Sometimes a normal asteroid that is not orange will have good amount of painite too.
- Deploy cargo scoop. Its icon on the right should light up. Fire some collector limpets. I use 2 controllers with total of 4 limpets since I have 1 2D mining laser (it can mine quite fast).
- Begin to mine. If an asteroid has surface deposits, I use an abrasion blaster to dislodge it. For sub-surface deposits, I don't have success collecting them using sub-surface displacement missile.
- If prospector limpet detects a painite core, target the fissures and use a seismic charge launcher to fire 1 charge into each fissure. The yield panel will show up on top right. The graph goes from yellow to red. I think blue is good yield. Then detonate the charges by targeting the asteroid fissure from Contacts panel. If I fail, I fire charges again depending of the graph. Be sure to be about 2 km away, I got my ship to 2% for being too close once. After explosion, use abrasion blaster to collect the surface deposits. They will have high content of painite. The higher the content (sometimes I get like 1 fragment with 92% of painite), the more painite from refinery.
- In the Contacts panel, I add other stuff I don't want into ignore list. The collector limpets will ignore them. I don't exclude materials since I will need them later.
- In the refinery tab in Inventory, if there is something I don't need, I vent them out (using the orange triangle at the right). Also, I usually I have to vent out 3-5 limpets to make space for painite cargo. I try to have 96 cargo space filled with refinery 6 bins also filled with painite.
- After asteroid is depleted (the prospector limpet will show this info), use pulse wave analyzer and prospector limpets again.

- When I am done, I go to the selling point, yesterday was Parenni system, as fast as possible. If NPC interdict me, I try to escape.

Hope this helps.

You can still laser mine, 10 diamonds in 2-3 hours is unlikely.
Are you using prospectors and looking for asteroids with good percentage?
For core/subsurface you need....

Detailed surface scanner -
Fire these into icy rings to find hotspots

Pulse wave analyser-
This is how you find core asteroids, it takes a utility slot.

Refinery-
Uses optional internal slot

Hardpoints -
Seismic Charge launcher
Subsuface missile launcher
Abrasion Blaster

You also need collector and prospector limpets.

Now your all kitted up, how do you mine...

Cores

Fire your probes from "detailed surface scanner" into icy rings to find hotspots.
Drop out of supercruise near hotspot centre
Continuously ping your "Pulse wave analyser"
You will see asteroids some asteroids glow.
You want to look out for asteroids that glow very brightly.
Fire a prospector at your selected asteroid
Target it as it flies
Watch bottom left off screen to see what it finds
If you see "core detected " in red at the bottom its party time

Fire seismic charges into fissures
Holding down fire to charge them up and match the strength of the fissure
You can over or undercharge one if you like
Place the charges untill the widget in the top right is in the blue zone with the tick lit up
Back away and wait for the boom

After boom send limpets to collect the loose fragments
There will also be more surface deposits on the big asteroid chunks
Use your abrasion blaster to free these

Core roids with LTD's are usually worth around 14-20mill per asteroid

Subsurface mining -

Sometimes when you prospect a roid youl see a LTD content but no core
Check contacts list for LTD subsurface deposits
If present select subsurface missiles
Fire at a deposit and keep hold of the button
The missile will burrow into the roid
You keep hold of the button untill the wideget in bottom right shows high yield
When its in the zone let go of fire and boom
Collect your chunks

Hope this helps :)

Mining is not a cake walk but can be learned. Once you have the basics you will get better.

If you need friends let me know.

Hey, noob here

I got around 165~ hours in game.

Started watching few guides on "how to get rich quick", and I did feel it was kinda wierd that I wasnt getting anywhere near what they got, like 200Mil/h on laser mining on a python, or a Type 9....the Type-9 specially, damn thing is so slow, I make more money on my Anaconda, even with half the cargo.

I get around 50-100Mil/h laser mining LTDs on the triple spot in the Col 285 sector, on my anaconda. May be I`m just bad at finding the asteroids, priobably...

tried core mining, I sucked at it so hard, that I went back to laser mining.
Now, I`m doind around 250-400Mil/h on my Anaconda doing the Egg thing(reset sub-surface LTD deposits with a fighter)

funny... first time I went out mining, with an adder (after doing the, farm bountys to get mining gear and the adder stuff)...I bought the controllers, but no limpets(may be I didnt hear it on the video, may be it wasnt mentioned, idk), and was out of money(cause I rushed the first part), so I had to manually pick up things till I could sell 1 LTD and buy the limpets xD

If you're into mining as a semi-lucrative hobby, get a pulse wave analyzer and subsurface missile launcher. If you find one asteroid with subsurface low temp diamonds you could get 20-40 tons to sell at 1.5 mil per ton. I tried this recently in a normal system with ice ring planets. No triple hotspots.

Apparently they fixed this in the new patch so fighter wont refresh it anymore.

Not sure if i could do just subsurface, i mine for this moment...

as much as for the cash, kinda why im in a keelback there when i have a conda or type 9 i could be using :)

Still works.

They fixed it only on Core asteroids, you can still do it on asteroids without Core deposits.
Just did a run with +300 LTDs in around 1h20min

People always talk about low temperature diamonds, but I always end up pilling up a bunch of credits by looking for good Tritium trades...

Its a weird thing indeed.
