Steam key and Frontier account
Yesterday after being disappointed with my No man's sky purchase, I was wondering if I would enjoy Elite Dangerous and if it was worth buying.
Because I know the game is notorious for its learning curve, I decided to install Elite Dangerous : Arena which was still on my Steam account, just to get a feel of the game.
I then decided to purchase the base game, but when I launch it and log in with the Frontier account I created by entering my Arena key, I only see the options to play the Arena mode.

I'm guessing that I need to add my new key to my Frontier account, but I can't find where since I was asked my Arena key during the account creation process.
Am I supposed to create a new account ?

Also, is Elite Dangerous : Horizon an update included with the game, a DLC, an expansion, another game or something else ? I'm confused.

Thanks.

Make sure your Frontier account is linked to your Steam account, sadly that's necessary since last year when the licencing scheme changed and Steam isn't simply reselling keys any more, and older Frontier accounts may well still be "standalone".

After you have set up that link, try the log in via Steam option again, and maybe give it an hour or so, because it can take some time for the licence to trickle through.

Well I remember seeing this option at the bottom left of the launcher when I was trying Arena, but it is not there anymore :

When I choose to log in, these buttons are replaced with the "Play" one.

Ok so I found out how to get the "log in with steam" button back via this this manipulation :
https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=277

But clicking the button prompt me with the same options (Create a new account or Use existing account).
And again, if I choose to use my existing account, I only have the Arena options..

Not completely sure, since I never had that problem. Maybe read in the sticky thread about it and follow all the steps.

This is getting even weirder. I think I found a link to add a key to an existing frontier account (https://tools.elitedangerous.com/register) so I went to my Steam list to get my key but the option isn't there.
I thought I would go and check my Steam transactions history and get the key from there, but the game is listed as "Elite: Dangerous (non-key)".

So.. I have no idea what I bought.. I guess I'll have to go through the Frontier support, thanks anyway.

Well, the link you provided only had a message along the line of "No third party linked to this account", but the "Partner Keys" section just above it had a "Sign in via Steam" button.
When I clicked it, a new option to claim my Elite Dangerous : Arena key was available on the website (no mention of the base game), but I noticed that it also mentioned that my account was now linked to Steam.

So I tried to launch the game again and I think it worked, so thanks for the help !

(If anyone is interested, I'm still looking for answers regarding the "Horizon" part of this game)

Horizon is effectively an expansion that offers content beyond the base game.

If you plan on sticking with the game pick up horizons, adds a lot of content and gives access to some nice ships.

Yeah I'll have to look into it, I somehow missed the DLC section of the base game store page or maybe I got confused because it's called a Horizon season pass.
I hope I didn't pass on a bundle deal with both for a better price.

In short Horizons add ability to land on planets and use RCV (Surface Recon Vehicle). Add engineers which allow you to make heavy modifications to you ship stats (must have feature). Ability to buy 2-3 new ships. And as a bonus Multi crew mode (2 players on one ship).

If you had taken the Commander Deluxe edition you'd have both plus some colour skins for some early ships.
