Normally i like heavy and death metal but it just doesn't fit the pace of the game a lot of the time.. Better for fast pace shooters like Apex.
If immersion is what you're looking for anyway. Classical has always been the go to genre for all things space.
I like Radio Sidewinder the most because it's music fits the game very well and they have a really nice selection of lore friendly commercials and having the galnet news presented by fictitious presenters like "Computer Pete" or "Robot Rachel" is a great addition. Can't recommend it enough.
I also heard only good things about Lave Radio, but never really listen to it personally.
You can find a host of many Elite radio stations here to chose from:

Radio Sidewinder also available here:

Metal can still be good... good music is good music. But yeah it doesn't always evoke feelings of serenity and endless wonder. Some works better than others for that. Sometimes the music helps get you into the game, sometimes the game is an amusing thing to watch while you listen to music.
Just depends what you want. If you just want to listen to what you enjoy then yea Metal all the way. If you want to immerse yourself for a sense of serenity as you say, for me that would be something classical.
The main soundtrack for space odyssey is obviously great for a moment of reveal. You can sort of imagine the part where the song drops as a Thargoid presents itself. Drama lol

And if you want to find more music by the same guy (he's the guy responsible for a LOT of well known/liked game soundtracks over the years, Wipeout, Lemmings, Sensible Soccer, Shadow of the Beast, Spellbound, Crazy Ivan etc...), his website is http://www.coldstorage.org.uk/
