Sidewinder > Cobra MKIII > DBX > Python > Frivolous spending
Edit: In fact, I'd probably pick a whole bunch of different core internals.
Type 6 is not for mining. It only has 2 hardpoints, and neither of them even medium. Of this two for mining you really want Keelback.
I was just mining in Keelback last days and also faced "1 slot short" problem. I ditched the shields (there is first time for everything I guess). I did grab the military grade alloys so I have good hull at least and while I did take some damage around the asteroids it was Ok. With lightweight alloys and no shields it would be tempting the fate though.
There is no reason to upgrade from the DBX tbh, but if you are looking for "the next step" jack of all traders a Python or a Krait Mk2 are the next choices. The latter trades health and a slot for a fighter bay.
If you mine for money (or even just for quantity for engineer unlock) then you probably won't use mining lasers [much], just abrasion, displacement missile and seismic charge. No distributor problem with them. And because you want all 3 you are left with only one mining laser (probably small) - and if you put all pipes to weapons then you can fire continuously without stopping. And one small mining laser produces about same amount of fragments as 2 collector limpets can collect real time (and you probably won't have more because of module limitations so more mining lasers are waste anyway). So Keelback is actually well balanced for mining.
Of course bigger ships will do better (like on everything). But in this price class/size Keelback seems like good pick for mining. Definitely much better than Type 6 OP is considering.
Damn did I turn on my time machine by accident? On my computer it shows this thread is from 13.6.2020, definitely long after new mining tools were introduced :-).
Btw. I am no expert on mining but I mined the required 500T for Selene using all 4 methods in Keelback in the last 2 days so I'm quite familiar with what Keelback can do in this field. Any other ship I will not comment on (so Asp Explorer as original thread topic might be actually better but also more expensive).
Yes, those tools were introduced a while ago. However, subsurface deposits only became relevant a week or so after the Fleet Carrier Update, because that's when people started noticing that their yields were greatly increased. That would be June, 18th or so. Before that sub surface missiles existed, yes, but they were certainly not meta, and they would certainly not considered for a mining build.
