What is the difference between Reputation and Influence?

I'm starting to see rewards where you can choose one or the other but I'm not sure what the difference between them is?

Reputation is your personal standing with the faction and you need it to advance towards friendly/allied status. Influence is about how much power the faction has in the system, and you only need to bother with it if you're into the politics "meta".

The reputation is yours - how a minor faction sees you. Higher your reputation with them - better missions they will offer to you.

The influence is theirs - what standing a minor faction has, comparing to other factions. It's important if you want that particular minor faction to take over a station, for example. Or even over the whole star system. It's more if you are interested in the background simulation play, not to get your personal gain.
