why is turning so slow?
Both pitch and yaw are painfully slow, it takes around 20 seconds to do a full turn. the only thing at a reasonable speed is rolling, is there some slow button i pressed by accident?

You're probably going at full speed. Turning speed is increased if your speed is inside of the blue section of your speed meter. Try that out. Also your fit will affect turn speed, as well as the ship.

Forgot to mention, also I think pulling up/down is faster than going left or right. I forget the technical terms for each, but try pulling up.

Also depends on the ship.

Yep. Fly smaller and faster ships if you want a good maneuverability. Don't fly the Anaconda or the Type-9.

Yaw is intentionally slow for every ship to prevent ships being mobile turrets. Fun fact Type 7 has the fastest yaw rate I believe.

Correct, significantly higher than any other ship.

Fun fact, the Type 7 also makes a really good exploration ship and when stripped down with dirty drives can achieve a decent top speed as well. (over 400 boost).

Yeah as a first time pilot my initial reactions to the controls were they were beyond frustrating. Im sure it will get better with time, but the amount of accidental rolls I was doing was dam near making me dizzy

A LOT of ships also benefit from boost turning, case in point, the Krait Mkll, turns really well on its own but if you boost while turning you will flip around fast as hell.

Also, I recommend learning how to FA off boost turn, toggle FA off, boost then flip around, most if not all ships rotate/flip faster with FA off, though learning how to fly FA off is an exercise on its own so take care.

Yaw, (turning left and/or right) in flight is a "helper" to rolling and/or pitching (up and/or down). Once you have mastered that adding boosting will make you a top tear combat pilot and help in general flight.

By "helper" I mean if you can keep practicing and not get frustrated with the multitasking of using the three controls it helps manuvering especially larger ships. In my vette I use those three in conjunction with boosting and eat up large or small ships. A lot of good combat pilots use small ships against the three large combat/multiroll ships but not mine. Not saying I am the best, not by far and It took many flight hours of focused combat against "wings" to master this type of control.

I don't see any blue section of anything

really doesn't answer my question

On the throttle, to the right of your radar you'll always have a blue region. That's where your ship is the most maneuverable.

Don't use yaw to turn. Roll and pitch instead. Use yaw for minor adjustments.

Have the throttle in the middle of the blue zone. Look at the indicator to the right of your radar, which moves according to your throttle position. There's a blue section near the middle (assuming you're using default hud colours).

Rotation rate (in all directions) is at its best when your relative speed indicator (the bars that fill/empty as your ship speed increases/decreases) matches the throttle indicator in the middle of the blue zone.

4 pips to ENG will also help improve turn rate.

Turning flight assist off and using boost at the right moment can vastly increase turn rate (in combat you'll often see large ships do this and they sort of snap around).

What ship are you flying? Some are more agile than others.
