It isn't essential to use sticks, but I would not go back to a pad after using a x52 for the majority of my play time.
There is no substitute for typing letters/numbers; i have no idea how it's done on the consoles.
only problem I've ever had was the binds for boost and landing gear,
boost is B
landing gear is hold B and press down,
more then once I've boosted into the back wall because I did the combo too fast.
I do have a HOTAS which I use for simulators, but in the case of ED I find the XB1 controller works really well, to me it suits this type of game better than a HOTAS, we all have our personal preferences but you most certainly can complete all the content with an XB controller.
You can bind button combinations on both and it is fun to play with a controller.
Using Lateral thrust is an important part of handling ya ship, so a controller is a good option if you don`t want to spend a lot of money for a HOTAS you can use only for flight sims.
