I didn’t unlock engineers until late game, but that was my choice. They require an amount of grinding I really don’t think newer players will enjoy.. I do it because I already have all the money and ships I need, so exploring planets for loot is an ok use of my time, and I can upgrade ships I plan to use for a really long time.
Just one thing though, it’s best to farm high level crafting materials, since even a single level 5 items is worth like,, hundreds or thousands of level 1 items. The only exception I is when I’m bounty hunting; I kill lots and lots of ships, and just keep a few collector limpets around to scoop up the drops. It very quickly fills up my inventory with manufactured parts.
Use a Krait MK2 if you want a solid all around ship with a fighter. Use a Python or Chieftan if you want a solid all around ship without a fighter.
When you have a bil or more, then get your Anaconda.
More on topic, Engineers take quite a lot of mats and getting those quickly can be wearying. You can get some solid early game upgrades by unlocking guardian powerplant, power distributor and Frame Shift booster.
My first upgrades are usually a shield, reinforced or military armor, a fuel scoop, extra O2 Incase of an emergency, and tossing in hull and module reinforcement packages are an easy and cheap way to keep your new ship safe. After that add other basic but poor upgrades, like a power distributor, reactor, weapons, etc. You’ll have a passable ship in no time, and you’ll swap out those old parts for better ones as you need them, and it won’t seem so expensive since you already invested credits in the medium level upgrades.
(Although I personally suggest a type-9. I upgraded and engineered mine, so it’s not really fair, but it made me Rich. I originally used it to rescue people from stations, it was so good at it and I felt good doing it. Eventually I used it for moving cargo and while it’s good, it’s shields aren’t often strong enough to fight off NPC pirates, so I use my Cutter for that now. My Type-9 is mostly for mining, but it’s so good. Log in day after day until the massive cargo hold is full and pirates generally ignore diamonds, for some reason, so I’m mostly totally safe. If you want to just fight, yeah the Krait Mk2 is awesome and definitely falls inside your price range. It was the first ship I ever engineered, and I still use it.)
This video will get you into an anaconda fast.

I've heard a lot of good things about Chieftain. Krait, definitely heard many good things too. I'm really used to flying agile medium ship, and FAS was my main for a long time.
Is chieftain hull-tanky and agile as FAS? I really like the look of it and the module slots. I also like the slots on challenger but not a lot of people talk about it. Would you recommend chieftain over challenger?
I haven't tried the challenger yet. Working up a FDL. I've heard the challenger's benefits don't outweigh those of maneuverability.
I can say the Chieftan is a hoot to fly, very maneuverable, decently armed. I use one to beat on Tharhoids. The Krait2 is tough. Well armed, maneuverable enough and very flexible. It also has a coffee machine, so its clearly the best ship in the game.
Just play for fun, engineer what you like.
Just remember the large multipurpose locks you out of content reliant on docking with outposts. They only have small and medium pads.
