Elite Dangerous Encrypted Data Storage Salvage Missions
I have a scoop on my ship, I lower it, I can find the data container floating in space, i've got it lined up perfectly but as i approach it, i just crash into it and after a few attempts it just gets destroyed....what am I doing wrong?

It's a bit misleading on the targetting. You need to make sure your ship is going "over it" rather than "into it" even if the white dot is perfectly aligned. The game has physically dropped a scoopy army thing underneath your ship.

Make sure that you don't have the landing gear down - it often blocks the cargo scoop and it will bounce the scooped object. On some ships the weapons do the same - keep them retracted.

Also make sure that you scoop it at a speed below 40m/s. Above that speed you will not be able to scoop. You will see the colour of your scoop targeting screen changes when you fly too fast. You will also hear it.

Collector limpets are your best friend!

I'll try flying over it... and retracting everything except the cargo scoop...
If that doesn't work ill try Collector limpets, do i need to fire or deploy the limpets? i haven't bought them yet, im new to the game.

1. Equip a collector limpet controller, it is an optional modules
2. Go to advance maintenance, buy a bunch of limpets
3. Put collector limpets in a firegroup (like weapons)
4. Fire the collectors and it will auto collect whatever is around you

It might be problematic with early ships, where you have a very limited cargo space for those limpets.

I got a Cobra III, i did a bunch of courrier missions and got up to over a million (units/dollars), and bought a cobra instead of the sidewinder.

Deployed hardpoints on some ships will block the cargo scoop. I think it's the case on the Fer de Lance. Check your landing gear isn't deployed too. Also, make sure your capture speed is under 30m/s.
And yes, fly by the cargo scoop aim monitor, not by eyeball.
