Star Type Exploring & Planetary Bodies
Hi all,

I'm new to Elite and have taken up exploration as primary go to activity to help get acclimated and get my bearings in the game. My main way of generating income currently is visiting different planets and using the FSS/DSS. In so doing I've noticed there are wildly varying values you can be given for studying different planets, from a few thousand credits to over a million.

From what I've learned so far, ELW, HMC, WW are the most desirable planet types to scan. I've heard Rocky/Ice are negligible value. I had heard that gas giants could be worth scanning but in effect I have found the value not commiserate with the effort. I have also heard anecdotally that ammonia worlds may be worth searching for but I notice most guides seem to omit them.

In searching for the more desirable planetary types, I am traveling to A, F, G & K star types as they seem to be found most commonly. Are there any other star types I should be on the lookout for in my course plotting? Can Ammonia Worlds and Gas Giants be worth scanning? Are any of the rarer star types worth exploring for planets? Are rare stars worth exploring themselves?

I have consulted a few guides and know there are some tools you can use to plot valuable exploration routes but I am interested in learning more about celestial bodies and types rather than just leaning on tools.

Yes gas giants can be worth scanning. Gas giants with water or ammonia based life are valuable enough imo to scan them. Really with the scanner working the way it does now, there is no reason to not scan everything in every system you enter, although I get not mapping it all. Make sure you map your ammonia, earthlike, and water worlds, and you can do the gas giants if you want. Its not like it takes that long to do, and it all adds up when you get back. Yeah 250 credits for a rocky moon might not be much, but when its like 10 of them in orbit of a gas giant, and you do it over and over again because they're right there...I see a lot of half-scanned systems out there because people are super-impatient.

Because people do not scan moons very often, or airless worlds, they miss out on picking up other signals that can lead to earning credits or finding something of value too. Although to be fair it can be a rare occurrence.

I will note that I do not travel 125k+ ls to map things, most of the time. On occasion I have gone to map three or four water worlds, or multiple earth-likes.

O and B class stars can have ELW, but more likely WW.
Ammonia planets are worth over 1mill.
any terraformable planets are worth it.
Gas giants with life are not worth the effort unfortunately, type 2 gas giants are about the same worth as metat rich planets.

F8 VI are very good for ELW.
For O,B,F,A class stars go for the cooler ones 7-9 (ie F8)
For G.K.M. class go for hotter 3-0 (ie G2 V)
O,B,A class that are very hot 1-0, have chance of biological's on planets

that's it for now, fly safe

Thanks for that info!

I just have one question, you mention that pilots miss out on picking up "other signals" that can lead to earning credits/finding things of value... which signals are you talking about? Are you just referring to planetary signals or the lower spectrum signals? I've noticed there's a lot of stuff going on the lower end of the spectrum but I hadn't noticed it contributed or leading to anything of note or concern. I guess now after reading that I'm wondering if there is more I'm missing out on.

Thanks again

If you want to know what is worth scanning credits-wise, you can check this post:

It explains how the prices are being calculated, and what body can bring you what credits.
