Slightly longer answer, You kinda don't need the SRV, since all you need is a data scanner, and ships also have one: you can actually make the scan from your ship. It'll need to be a very small ship, because you'll need to be literally touching the terminal, and the terminal won't show up in your targeting system until you're on top of it, so consider it a faster, but much trickier, method to complete a datascan mission.
You can scan the beacon from your ship, but you will need to be less then 100 meters from the beacon to scan it. Very difficult in a ship if the beacon is not out in the open. Also as you have noted you will need to enter a trespassing zone. The longer you are in the trespassing zone the more aggressive the response will be. If done quickly you should be able to pop in and out with no more then a 500 credit fine and a few pop shots on your shields. Drive at least 2k away before recalling your ship.
A training scenario might be very helpful.. the on line videos just dont seem to help with the issue I am having..
- Get on your SRV and start approaching the settlement
- Once you get closer, you should see by now some targets popping up, or use your Internal panel (left hand side) under Contacts tab, you should see something like "Hub access terminal" select it and you'll see whether is public or private, and will also show up as "Mission Target"
- Approach that target up to 100m
- Switch to Turret mode, analysis mode, have Data link scanner assigned to a fire group, and "fire" (press and hold) until data is downloaded
- This may trigger an alarm, so just try to run away if possible, if you get destroyed don't worry you'll respawn on your ship.
- For high security settlements is possible they'll start shooting at you even before you get to scan the hub, just put all pips to Sys and Eng, and try to scan before blowing up
- Very likely you'll get a fine and/or bounty, just head to closest Interstellar Factors to pay it off.
OR, a lot of other cmdrs say you should be able to scan it with the ship directly, but you have to get super close, almost bumping your ship with the station, I've done it only once, with bigger ships I've never seen the "target hub", so I don't bother and just hop on your SRV.
I never knew you could fly your ship close and scan that way, I might try that and see if it works.
I have an illegal mission which is supposed to be done with the SRV.
Again, it's mentioned to sneak past the flying robots.
But how to sneak through them? What is their spotting-radius? What to expect when I download the data?
I can't find any vid or information on that. Instead, I landed in a detention center 15 jumps away and I feel even more clueless as I was before.
Enlisting at the office (on-foot on a station) and flying via dropship to battles... -> no clue if it has any effect on an ongoing war in the current system.
Info is hard to find when I even don't know what I need to look for.
Depending on what size settlement you are in there may be one or several data terminals. They look like a box with a pole on top and you can target from range with the SRV.
Different settlements have different levels of defense, some are very easy, others are quite well fortified. Those are fun.
Land a ways a way and look through the targets with your SRV. Find the thing you have to get to.
Sabotage missions are even more fun with hoards of drones and turrets.
Your SRV can kill everything but if you get overwhelmed it can get rough, grab cover to regen your shields, you can repair your hull in tue right menu sub menu of inventory.
Detection radius is pretty broad so I usually just shoot the drones.
Fly in, select the data point from your ship, scan it with the ship, boost away.
Or use a Scorpion SRV which can mow down the skimmers.
Confirmed works. Used a small newly bought imperial courier with a stock data link scanner on it. ezpz.
