All missions are TOO high threat level to complete
I just finished the starting sector Dormi. as soon as I left the system and start the real game I started encountering missions of threat level 4 and beyond. They pay really well but I cannot complete them. Most of the times I get jumped by Anacondas or multiple pirate ships. I have a Viper on which I spent 400k in upgrades and still cannot fight these ships. On top of that I made my ship too heavy so now I cant jump to most nearby systems.

Don't take missions you can't handle is the obvious advice. Takes some time to get good at combat and make your combat ships capable of taking on wings of high ranked enemies.

A skilled pilot could probably take on an anaconda, even a high ranked one, in a viper (although you'd really want to be engineered if you don't want to spend ages poking away at the shields), but not a new player.

If you made your ship too heavy then you need to rethink what you are doing. The vliper is not a great ship for travelling, its a combat ship. Also makes a nice courier ship if you strip it down.

What kind of missions do you take? At the beginning, while you still learn the ropes, you might be better with delivery missions. Don't take the fighting ones.

If you want to do some fighting - go to a Navigation Beacon near from a main star, or to a low Resource Extraction Site (RES), and kill wanted ships that you think you can handle. Then you can cash in the collected bounties at a local station, in a Contacts menu. This way you will learn the fighting techniques on your own terms, without the game forcing enemies at you.

On this topic, does anyone have a good measure of where I should be at in terms of difficulty - depending upon my ship?

I ran around in an engineered Vulture for a while, and have a Chieftain and FDL both geared for combat; but I seem to get my butt handed to me any time I don't take on specifically easy stuff like bounty-hunting at Nav Beacons.

I know I could go out there and make attempts, but I got so sick of dying during missions that I gave up on combat altogether. Even with the best non-Anaconda ships I could build+engineer, I simply couldn't find challenges to suit my apparent skill level.

Is there some rule-of-thumb I can use for this, rather than gambling my re-buy everytime a combat-type mission would send me out into the black? :-)

The problem is that all missions are too dangerous. I had no problem defending in mining or in combat. but then all of the sudden the missions got too dangerous. There isnt anything else to do. Everything was good until I stopped recieving missions tagged for "novice" pilots, now all of the missions are expert or master

I upgraded my ship to add stronger weapons tougher shields and some scanners for bounty hunting.

All missions? You can't handle delivery, passenger, or courier missions? Those should be a cakewalk.

Missions of 'threat level 4'??? You sure you're not jumping into thargoid zones? 'Cos they are the only 'missions' (and they're not even missions as such) designated by number. Every kind of mission in E:D is designated by RANK.
What game are you playing - maybe you're getting confused?

All missions except ones which pit you against other ships are doable despite the rank of it, interdictions are impossible to lose, even in a type 9 heavy so I wouldn't worry too much.

I wouldn't go as far as that - people do manage to lose interdictions to NPCs from time to time. So it's not impossible, but is pretty much doable. ;)

Nah, i generally lose interdictions to NPCs in my type 10, at least if they are smaller ships. But its not like anything can mass lock me, so i'm out of there easily.

I also have a couple of big weapons fitted so i can give the NPC a good thrashing for their trouble.

If i were to make a bet -OP is taking wing missions and trying to complete them Solo.

Actual Solo missions rarely, if ever, spawn anything over threat level 3, specially for a low-level player.

In fact, OP mentions multiple pirate ships jumping on him. That ONLY happens in wing missions (in Solo massacre missions multiple pirates spawn, but they don't get aggro with the player all at once)

So, OP:

-Wing missions are supposed to be done in a wing, not by yourself.
-Wing missions can be recognized by having a blue circle icon in their description.

So, don't take Wing missions and then try to complete them Solo in a dingy unengineered Viper Mk3. Take Solo missions only, and nothing above your own Combat level (the combat level of the mission is also in the mission description.)

Yes read what agony wrote at top . also you have 2 fighters of top tier fighters, FDL and Vulture, Vulture is best IMO, but others would argue the fdl. Anyway, practice in a res site (high or low) and use the cops as back up , follow them and join in on their kills, this will give you more experience at both combat and fire control.

Meantime if you dont want combat then try deliveries or passenger hauling, Most missions will still send pirates after you, but you dont have to fight, try to escape instead, throttle down , submit , and insta run.

Atm I'm doing some courrier missions, they are really easy to do and you will most likely not getting chase.

I was going to say something similar, though it's not just thargoids - the various signal sources/points of interest....whatever people call them....have threat levels as well. Either way, it's not usually related to missions unless you're picking up particular high ranked missions that require you to find and enter a particular signal source/POI for salvage or a particular hunt.

Hey all thanks for the help. you really helped me and gave me info about the game that I didn't know. :D

Now to clarify some things:
I was jumping into systems that upon, arrival, had their NAV beacons and mining fields set to threat levels WAY beyond my skill. some were level 3 some were 4.
I kept getting contracts that had my experience level, competent, and were SOLO; however, as mentioned before, all of their mission areas were too high of a threat for me.
Eventually I tried to take on one of the solos missions to disable a transport ship's turrets, but died upon arrival.
I got sent to another system and bought my ship back. After a few jumps I found a hub that had decent missions that weren't in dangerous locations.

Note: I didn't know Thargoids were aliens so maybe that's why I kept getting killed. I honestly thought they were a faction. Noob mistake LMAO

I would use the mission filters for LEGAL jobs, don't do illegal work until you know much more of what your doing.
Disabling turrets would be illegal , and you would be fined when doing it.
Start by doing some transport cargo or data until you get better.
Practice fighting by collecting bounties from wanted ships in resource extraction sites (Res site -planet rings)
while the cops can help you or you can help the cops.
After which you should be ready to try more things.
Thergolds are hard and require a special build for your ships. stay away for now.
Good luck cmdr o7
