How do drones work?
Hey there!

I'm quiete new to the game. I just managed to get my Viper after two days with the game. Now I would like to start with mining in order to get the finances going, but I'm awefull when it comes to flying towards small, moving, objects :D

I've seen on youtube that some people apparently had drones that collected all their ressources. I even found an optional module for this type of drone.. but I have no idea how to deploy them. I'm probably missing something here. Can you guys point me in the right direction? Thanks :D

Drones have to bet set in your firegroup like weapons on the right side of the panel. :awswemera:

set the in weapons like Caeris said

Notes:
if your have targeted something - the drone will only collect that one item
if you have NO target selected - the drone will collect everything with in range

You need to install 2 modules in your ship:

-Limpet controller of the specific type that you wish to use. Collector Limpet Controller in your case (there's also repair, fuel transfer, and decontamination limpet controllers, and I *think* also some type for harvesting tissue samples from Thargoid ships).

-Cargo hold

Then you must go through the resupply interface at a spaceport in order to purchase some limpets. Each of them is worth 1 ton of cargo space.

In order to use them, you must open your cargo hatch and have the limpet controller you wish to use, bound to an active firegroup.

Collector limpets can work in two different ways:

-By picking up object that you have selected. The limpet will expire upon depositing the object within your cargo hold.

-By working in passive mode. If you do not target any objects, active limpets will automatically retrieve any collectible objects near you for a period of time until they expire.

If you want to do mining, you want to use the second option or you will run out of limpets very quickly.

As a sidenote, I hope that's a Viper MK4, cause the Mk3 has very little optional internal space. For mining, you'll want to get something with some sizeable room for cargo (preferably a proper cargo ship).

Thanks for your help guys! I'll see if I can make them work later this day!

Oh and while I am at it: Can you tell me if there is a way to identify which asteroid contains which materials? I couldn't figure that one out either, but I might be blind or something. I just started mining random rocks yesterday (just to see all the ressources fly into the emptyness of space, instead of my cargo hold :D).

Ah thank you! I'm currently at work (home office) but I will see if I can manage to send a few little guys out there to get some materials for me later this day! :) So if I understand correctly I just have to bind the collector limpets to a firegroup, and once that's done all that needs to be done is to start mining with an open cargo hold?

I think I did that yesterday. I had the mining lasers set as primary weapon, and the drones as secondary. But maybe I just forgot to actually open the cargo hatch or something like that.

Wouldn't be the first time. You won't believe how often I forget to close it either, only to realize it's still open when I try to jump to a station :D

Ah, my mistake! It's a Cobra Mk3 (I think) that I've got, not a Viper. At first I intended to purchase a Viper because.. well.. it looks nice, but I was told the Cobra is a good overall allrounder, while the Viper is more like a glass canon for fighting.

But if you (or anyone here) have a better suited ship in mind. I'm always open for some tipps :) Right now I have like 748.000 credits on the bank. Mining didn't work out for me yesterday, but the location I found was full of wanted ships and I learned that you get a between 80k and 170k bounty just for assisting in destroying them :o

I couldn't help myself but to tickle a few of them to their deaths with my silly little laser weapons :) It felt a bit like cheating, but I was glad to make some money. Before that all I did was curier missions, and they gave like 40k at best, only around 20k in most cases.

Oh, can you guys tell me where I can find these drones? I thought I had some drones, but I just realized that I got just a control unit as an optional module. I checked out a few stations so far, but I couldn't find the drones themselfs..

.. but I might be looking in the wrong categories. I don't know :o

They're in the Advanced Maintenance category in Station services. they're not available in all stations, though.

To answer some of your questions from that long post:

To see what's inside an asteroid you need to buy a prospector limpet controller. Make it A rated if possible, since this will allow you to mine more fragments from an asteroid. The class (the number) doesn't matter in this regard, i higher number only means that you can fire multiple limpets at the same time. Since compartments are a premium for such small ships, stick to a 1A prospector limpet controller.
What you have to do is fire the limpet like you would a weapon. The limpet will fly straight ahead at a relatively low speed and attach itself to the rock if it hits one. You then have to target the limpet and the screen at the bottom left will show you the composition of the asteroid. With this information you can decide whether it's worth it to mine the asteroid or not.

As for ships: If you are indeed in a Cobra MK III, stick with it, it's the best mining ship you can buy with your budget. The Type-6 might be an option after you gather more money, but it costs 1 million credits and then you still have to outfit it and make sure you have enough left over for the rebuy. The other problem with the Type-6 is that it only has small hardpoints, which makes shooting fragments off an asteroid slower. On the other hand it has more internal compartments and thus space for better/more collector limpet controllers and cargo. The next definitive upgrade for mining would probably be the Keelback, but it has a base cost of 3 million credits.

If you actually want to mine, do not go to a resource extraction site, since there will be pirates like you said. Instead, just fly into a planetary ring (preferably a prestine one) somewhere (preferably at a hotspot of the material you want to mine). Shortly after you drop in some pirates will spawn and scan you. If you have nothing but limpets in your cargo hold, they'll be disappointed and buzz off, otherwise they will request you to drop some of your cargo or attack you if you don't comply. So it's best to always sell your cargo when you are done with mining, don't make a break or change location.

Another option to make money early on is to do some trading. Buy commodities for cheap at one station and sell it at another station that pays more for it. There are websites that help you finding lucrative trading routes in your area for your ship. For now, the Cobra MK III is probably the best ship for that activity, but a Type-6 would be a clear upgrade for that purpose once you have the necessary cash.

Naryoril already answered the question on how to scan the asteroids and Hamaki the one about where to buy them, so for now I'll just apologize for forgetting to mention the prospector limpets (I don't do mining often).

In regards to the bit about the ships: again, I agree with Naryoril in that the Cobra will be the best you can put to use right now with your budget.

And in regards to the Viper: the MK3 is indeed a bit squishy, but the Mk4 is intended to serve as a heavy fighter, and thus can be upgraded to be extremely tough and also accomodates a bigger power plant. I've never understood why people usually say the Mk4 is bad, but oh well. It is slower than the Mk3 but not enough to call it slow, and that's the only aspect that isn't a straight upgrade over the Mk3.

Also, cautionary advise here, since you earned some credits from shooting a bunch of ships: anytime you are carrying cargo in your ship, and you go through an area with criminal ships present, you may become a fair target for *every* pirate ship whose sensor range you enter. If you enter the sensor range of 20 pirate ships, it is possible you may be attacked by many or all of them simultaneously. Remember this if you decide to take a break from mining and decide to do some combat while you still have some cargo in your ship. I also do not advise you attempt serious combat without first swapping out your mining equipment and optional internals that have no use in combat, and replace them with armor or anything else that can serve you in a fight. Just put your mining equipment in storage, then you can swap it back into your ship anytime you wish to use it again, no need to rebuy it (unless you sell it).
