Help With Meta-Alloy Harvesting [don't know why it was removed before, allegedly there's profanity in this?]
I'm pasting my previous post that was removed for 'bypassing the profanity filter'. Not sure how that is the case. This is the original post(changes bracketed), and there isn't even a hint of profanity in it. So... maybe someone made a mistake?

Anyway, here's the post:

I've yet to even try [hunting down meta-alloys].
I've been googling and most of what I've found is either out of date, or isn't clear on how to go about looking for this stuff. I just started really playing recently, just made it to Farseer, and have basically just been doing cargo runs and market play.
So, how do I start?
What is needed?
Treat me like [maybe the 'i' word is considered profanity, so we'll say treat me like a naive, ignorant, simpleton], because, in this, I am.

Darnielle's Progress in Maia system sells meta-alloy. If you only need one you can buy it here.

If you are looking for larger amount you will have to harvest them yourself.
Go to one of these barnacles sites
https://canonn.science/codex/ripe-barnacles/
shoot the big minerals and collect your meta alloy.

Note that barnacles sites might become depleted over time. If you found a dead one you will have to go to another site.

That's a big trip for just one. I thought about it but not going that route. I'd prefer to learn to farm them anyway.

I kind of looked at that. So, if I understand, I need to grab my SRV, learn to use it, then set down near a site, and go 'shoot' them? How do I find the sites? Is there a range at which I'll see them/target them once i'm in 'atmo'?
Also, does anyone know if any of those systems are near Farseer? That's where I am now and I was thinking I'd base out of there until I headed to Sola.

You probably wouldn't find one any much closer. Barnacles are also in that region of space.
:/

Click the cannon research group link I gave you. You can found a full list of barnacles sits, complete with system and planet.
They are all a few hundreds lightyears away from Sol, you can check for yourself.

I was just hoping someone might know offhand of any systems close to Farseer, I'll look at that closer later today.
Thanks for the input.
More is always welcome. :)

On your radar you can see them showing up as white dots probably within a few km. Meta alloy is from the big "fruit" that grow on the barnacles. They are rare so there will probably only be around 1 to 3 of them in each site. Relog after you collected them to spawn more.

You only need one to unlock the Engineer, though.

True, but if there's money/utility in them, I'll want more. ;)

There are money in them, indeed. But be careful - they also attract pirates. ;)

LTDs (low temp diamonds) pay more, and you don't have to travel to the arse end of nowhere to get them :steamhappy:

You just need a mining laser and a refinery... Collection limpets aren't essential, but they're a also very good idea.
