After that maybe the Python or staight to Anaconda
Personally I use the Cutter, but there's some serious grinding involved in that one.
Other options are the keelback (a modified T-6 with less cargo but more weapons and a fighter hangar) and the Asp Explorer (an exploration ship that is also a good multi-role ship).
The Type 7, the Imperial Clipper (imperial farming required), the Python (the best medium cargo ship) or he Krait MK II are the next, and more a "intermediate tier" ships.
Finally, the Type 9 (or Type 10, the combat variant with less cargo and more weapons), the Anaconda or the Imperial Cutter (after a lot of rank farming) are your "high end" traders.
"Special" trading (Rares, small smuggling etc)= AspX, Python are probably best bets, but some more combat orientated craft can retrofit as a trader.
Also, even if its just a size 3, wear a shield. Seriously. I like to go two sizes down on a trader, should be more than enough without losing cargo space,

The Asp Explorer, krait Phantom, krait Mk2 and python are all great ships scaling up in price in this same order with the Python being the best trader of the 3,
The keelback as a trader doesn't make sense to me as it may have the same armament as the Cobra but it lacks the cargo space of its type 6 brother, take advantage of the fighter bay in the keelback and your back down to the same cargo space as the Cobra, but your slower and less maneuverable,
The type 7 needs a large pad so imo the Python is better but more expensive, if you want a large pad trader wait and save up for a type 9,
The Anaconda can be a good but expensive trader, I believe I had mine up over 400 t in trade fitment before I built my type 9 for super large hauls, and I still use it when I want to ensure that my cargo gets there, it's like bounty hunting with bait,
But yes for an Imperial nothing better then a Cutter, after the rank grind that is o7
