Having said that, if you like flying a space ship and doing space things. The game is a blast. If you want to run around on foot, not currently possible.
You can land on some planets if you get the expansion.
I think group activities are more fun but a lot of what I do is just me and the NPC and that is fun too.
I'd say watch some let's play videos and see if that looks like fun to you.
You can also switch modes any time you want - your progress carries on.
And since all your things are binded to your avatar/character, you can switch without any problem between the mods/servers.
If you have friends to play or just find a online group to flay together you can try the wings, but they are not something crucial. So... yes, you can enjoy ALMOST 100% of the game playing 100% solo.
Oh wow... So you can switch between solo and public and your stats and equipment stay with you? Awesome!!! I didn't know that. All other games I play, requires you to have to start over on each server you play on, and I HATE that!!! You just made my day. Thank you!!!
Not just that, if you play in open and meet someone you don't like, you can block them and never see them again.
On the other hand you can't block all gankers out there plus their whole friends-list.
@Sir Laffsalot:
Yup. It's true. It's one consistent safegame / commander over all game modes. I for my part play mostly in a private group (a large one with loads of palyers), as do many people who particularly do not want to run into PvP peeps who want to blast you into oblivion for their Lulz. Sadly there are quite a few.
The game does not have a campaign or much in the way of story. It is essentially a sandbox with a multiplayer hat taped on to justify cosmetic microtransactions.
Solo mode does still need a relatively stable internet connection, and is not really entirely 'offline'. (you just will not see other players in solo).
To clarify that further for OP, even playing solo, your actions and other players' action will impact the game. Play solo and sell a ton of valuables in a station, and the price will drop for everyone as the commodity has become more readily available. If players help a faction take over a system, then it will switch faction even for you, in your solo mode.
The difference is only between the ability to meet other players, or not. Everything else is connected anyway.
