Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous

So... What's the point?
After 100 hours I have come to the realization that there basically is no point to the game. All you do is grind credits to buy the best ships and upgrades there are and then what? Do the same old missions over again? And for what? There is nothing else to spend credits on (Engineers is basically the same thing, upgrades so you can do what you did but faster/better). Exploration gets pretty much the same after a short while.

I know it's supposed to be a sandbox, but usually sandbox games have a lot of content to offer, whereas in Elite it's pretty barebones. Not trying to hate on the game, just trying to understand why some people play Elite for thousands of hours not getting tired. I know the game has a 10 year development plan so I'm hoping it will grow and expand and get some more meaning.

The point....like any game is fun!

And like any off rails sandbox without a scripted campaign the number of hours you can do that depends on the person.

I've got at least 300 hours since the last time I did missions to

It seems you only know half the game.

You can play with friends and so on. You can go in a wing to a Hazardous RES and you may try to survive there. Probably, you'll end being surrounded by dozens of ships that will try to kill you and your mates. You can even organize some Fighters races with your friends through the rifts of a planet, and it's something really hillarious, specially if one of your friends crashes and explodes. Just use your imagination.

Wanna more laughs? Go to those HazRes in a Sidewinder. :)

Yeah, I had fun, and I still think the game is fun. I just think it's pointless when you have nothing else to throw your credits at

They haven't put the sand in the box yet.

IMO and i'm sure I will catch Grief for this.

There is nothing to do with your money. It almost seems as if the main reward and the only reason to push forward is to gain more credits which you can only buy new ships with. I mean dont get me wrong I love ED but it really needs more meat. I want to own a space station or build one and i dont mean modular building but maybe place a station down and gain profits from other players and or NPCs using it maybe a tax or something. Create a "fleet" or guild or corp whatever and have a base of operations be it on a planet or in space. Help Colonize a planet that I discovered. There is so much more that can be done. I played Eve I do not want an eve but would it be that bad if there were some eve like content in the game? Why cant players trade with each other, why cant we manufacture anything. As of now all we are, are Killers and delivery boys. As far as space sims go this is top notch but for me its all about immersion something ED lacks alot. And i dont mean immersion of being in the ship I mean interaction with the environment. We literally just fly from A to B delivering stuff or to A kill and then back to B. Exploration is really just looking at things Which again dont get me wrong is quite amazing but you make no mark on the universe. simply put there is no progression no new technology no amazing discoveries that change the universe no ownsership of anything and in a MP game no real interaction with other pilots... Just the ocassional passerby or interdiction. It just needs more player control IMO

I hear you man (Still having fun using this game to unwind before bed as a "podcast in background" game, though).

I think part of the problem is that there's so little structure and so little feeling of being able to contribute to something greater, which leaves some of us going "Ok...What now?"

If there was some kind of built in guild system, or the Power system was more interactive and acted like factions in an MMO, with shifting alliances based on player input and constant goals for you to meet with your fellow faction members making you feel like you're always contributing to something...

...But oh well. Game's still fun. As far as proper 3D space sims go, this is still the best one I've played. (Evochron has better flight and combat, but even less interactivity. Rebel galaxy has tons of interactivity, but isn't the proper 3D space sim I crave. etc).

Like life, there isnt any real end goal,or campaign for you to run through. You can do anything or nothing,it all depends on you.Now if youre having fun along the way does it really matter that it has no exactly specified goal?

you basically do whatever you want to do.

the mean of the game is to entertain yourself.
Slayze ツ Nov 19, 2016 @ 7:08am
The thing with "you can do whatever you want" is that you can't. There's only a handful of things you can do in a small spaceship. Even just getting out of the ship and walk around stations, possibly socialize with other people in hub areas, buy outfits for your character and such would breathe new life into the game. Eve did it, and while many consider it to be useless, just being able to get out of the ship and walk around for a bit feels so fresh when you return back. The commander creator is coming soon so I'm hoping that "space legs" will be a something that will come soon.

C'mon Varg. Be honest. You just want ED to have churches that you can burn down.

The thing is what happens when players have 'control'?

The boards are full of people crying their station got bombed!

Do we really think if there was more 'control" there wouldn't be more of this stuff? There would be lots more!

Also there are things other than money.

The entire engineer expansion was designed around other things being as important as money. You can't buy your way to the best ship....and I think some people resent that.

I completely agree, there is no ingame motivation or cause to take up, just an empty void. The plastic factions run by NPCs offer no rallying dynamic. The MMO side of the game is weak. And the whole game is full of invisible walls preventing you from developing anything persistant to care about....

Yes we know

You have told us enough times

You bought a game about flying a space ship and expect to run a station or space empire and generally have the game tell you how vitally important you are at every turn.....
