New mining equipment
I know how mining used to work, but the tutorial doesn't cover the new scanners or tools.
Do I need to use mining lasers AND the surface/subsurface tools or can I drop the mining lasers? I only have 2 hard points on my current miner.
Does the new mining scanner do anything but show surface and internal "nodes"?
If it helps, I'm only mining for engineering mats. Id prefer a written tutorial over a video.
Thanks in advance.

Tools you need
1. Seismic charge launcher (med only/hardpoint)
2. Abrasion blaster (small only/hardpoint)
3. Displacement missle (small only/hardpoint)
4. Pulse wave analyser (utility mount)
5. Detailed surface scanner (optional internal)

EDIT: displacement missle is not needed and so is the DSS(it makes things a lot easier tho)

Do I need that stuff for finding engineering mats though, or is that only for finding the lucrative stuff to sell? What's the displacement missile? I don't think I've seen that yet.

Mining laser will give materials from asteroids, VR mats from high content asteroids, not the best rates though and you need to find a ring that has material values i think. But to make money you look for core asteroids, with the seismic launcher / abrasion blaster loadout and pulswave scanner. Displacement missile doesnt matter, its trash.

Ok thanks. Im not looking to make money mining, only to engineer my ships.
Depends on what you want to do.

If you want to do deepcore mining you need seismic charges and abrasion blasters.

If you want to mine to get materials for engineering you need sub-surface displacement missiles and mining lasers.

Yeah dont mine for mats then, I found it dreadfully slow.

What mats you need? There is a pretty standard way to get some G5 mats quickly and then trade for w/e you really need (though thats not a good plan in the long run it will get you an FSD fast or w/e).

Go to here HIP 16613 system on planet 1 a at -11.0093, -95.6755.

That will get you G5 data and G5 raw to trade.

Then what you want to do for G5 manufactured is farm HGE (High grade emissions) for an easy way just look for systems in boom with over 8b pop and scan the nav beacon to see what signals are around. Fill your hold with w/e you can and trade for what you really need.

For G5 Data you can also do settlement datapoint scanning, but I find Bugkiller easier for the first load for fsd and such. Also, never, ever wake scan for datamined wake exception. I have tried to make that work so many times and every single time it takes 10x as long as trading for them does.

Also, a good tip if you are doing up your first longrange fsd ship, save upa nd do it on a krait phantom. They are great all around ships and can be kitted for extreme long range exploration even. Courier missions, farming, exploring, pretty much anything but big delivery missions it can do well. Though Krait mkII is far better for combat.

That's great info, thanks. Im currently based in Deciat(?) where Farseer is. Working on g5 for FSD.

Ahh sry edited my post with a build for you, just to make sure you see it ill send it again. Also, make sure you get some dirty drives while you at farseer, they critical for bubble work early on, drag mod.

Right now im in a gunship, trying to unlock stuff(really bef to get started on getting faction modules) while work my way up to a Corvette. Will probably buy another aspx at some point, but don't see myself in anything else until I've gotten a vette and gotten bored with that. I haven't really been grinding mats, just grabbing everything I see during missions.

If you have an aspX, or a python would be best, build this and go make 100m an hour then none of that will matter, though minelauncher gunships are great fun not saying they arent good ships, just do not do your first g5 fsd on one imo - https://s.orbis.zone/1-xz

Icy Rings - Void Opal hotspot - bigger = better. Only sell for 1.6m+.

I am relatively new myself and trust me, having a ship with a massive jump range is so nice early on. I literally just jump to where I want and ship my FDL or python to the station and use it there, thing only has a 11ly jump range lol.

Right now I have my gunship, my type 6 for mining/collecting, and an eagle(I use it as a shuttle and have ships delivered like you do). No aspx right now. I'll probably do that once im almost at rear admiral. The fgs is my main, and fit just about how I want(rp'ing an actual gunship: mc's and missile plus scanners, I call it my longbow) other than faction stuff and engineering.

May fit the type 6 to be a chinook since it has my srv.

Thanks for all the info. I really wasnt sure what I should be fitting for my purpose. Y'all have helped a lot.

As a sidenote to the above information, surface prospecting (pew pew rocks on planets in the srv) and jumping in to USS (low threat if you don't want combat) while you go about your daily business will provide you with engineering materials. As will scanning ships.

I've been making more trips to the surface lately and scan lots of ships along the way. I've just started getting back into USS, don't mind combat, that's my main activity.
What's your opinion on wake scanning? Is it worth it or not?
Manwith Noname Jan 30, 2019 @ 7:14pm
Yes, though I don't currently have one fitted as I'm off exploring where noone has gone before. I knew I'd forget to cover something in that post. When I was in populated areas, wake scanning nearly always pulled some sort of engineering data.

Edit: It seemed to return more results than scanning ships anyway.
