HELP PLEASE! scanner experts! Detailed surface scanner and rings - not working

trying to scan a ring with surface scanner but the probes just seem to go through it and it doesnt all light up identifying the different hotspots. When hit the plannet you get the sound effects and the scan but not the ring, please someone know anythign bout this help

Slide the reticle out till it says "RING"

done that, it says ring when i fire but seems to go through it rather than hitting it

Try launching the probes at different angles

Then you have already scanned that ring. Not all rings have hotspots, so you may have scanned it and no hotspots popped up because there are none there.

Also if you come up on a system you know you scanned and had hotspots there, and there are in your target list, but not visable on your actual screen, then you are in the wrong mode. Only Scanner mode shows hotspots, combat mode does not.

think theres a bug as both me and a mate DSS'ed a ring and he could see the hotspots when i couldn't, and yes i did fire them at the ring, no i had not scanned it before and if i joined his wing then it showed the points to, with what the mineral was etc, when i got nothing

edit: just went to one we did yesterday and now its showing the hotspots
