ED's in-game tools are at best half-arsed and mostly useless. Unfortunately, you need to use third party tools in ED. Like friglite2006 says, Inara is a good choice for this particular issue. Also EDDB like you mention. There are other tools. Google is your friend here.

"Dev 1: Ok guys there needs to be a way for people to be able to find out where material traders and tech brokers are located. The easiest and most reasonable way is to put a filter on the galaxy map.

Dev 2: Hey, I have an idea, how about we add the filters but make them visible ONLY if a player has docked at a system that offers these services?

Dev 3: Great idea and it's totally not cancelling out the point of the filters. No sir, it works hand in hand with the filters, it even makes them more useful dare I say."

Sums it up, doesn't it?

Yeah Inara is amazing. Whenever I'm looking for anything, I usually just google "Inara + the thing".

If you decide to use EDDB, you can use the stations section and select material trader under services, but it won't tell you what type of material trader is there, so you also need to select economy type for which type of trader you want. I believe it's hi tech for data, industrial for manufactured or extraction for raw materials.

very annoying state of affiars with alot of in-game searching, the only up side is once you have done plenty of inara trawling they are marked in-game for you atleast on your beaten tracks..still only within X amount of LY for some
