Can't figure out auto dock
What am I doing wrong? I have docking permission. I'm basically sitting right in front of the space station. Speed is zero. Auto dock is turned on in my computer thingy (button 3). What's left? Why isn't my ship automatically flying in? I originally quit this game back in 2015 after only 2 hours played, and I'm starting to understand why. I wanted to give this a really fair shake this time around, but holy crap.

edit--Can I get a DETAILED description? I'm trying to google, and I just can't find that critical step that I"m mission.

I'm in the freaking station at this point. Still no auto dock taking over.
Is your docking computer powered up in your list of modules (right screen, second tab)?

You probably don't have enough of power, so the lower priority modules were auto-disabled.

You can check the priority number that your docking module has, and increase it (lowering the number makes it a higher priority module). Or you can disable some module that you don't need right now, like a cargo scoop or a fuel scoop, so your docking computer module will have enough power.

pps if red could be low power you might need to turn off something else in modules

Yeah, it's most probably not having enough power. Turning off other modules is only a bandaid for the moment. I highly suggest you buy a better power plant for your ship. Once you have more experience and know what you are doing, you can plan around turning off modules you only rarely need. For me personally, it's too much of a pain, i always plan my ships around having enough power to have all modules turned on. The only time i'd make an exception is when i'd plan to make a ship with as much jump range as possible.
