Having said that, you can bypass the tool by pointing at whatever you are warping to and dropping your throttle to 75% when the counter hits 7.
Then you press j when close and boom don't need the assist.
i just done it, i have been trying to activate it before im in SC lol, i tried when i was all ready in SC and ive done it LOL, im so happy xD

Well... The super cruise assist can save a lot of time if used incorrectly (no, that's not a typo) :p
Since i found that out i install it on all my ships. It's not like those low grade internal compartments are of much other use once you got your hand on somewhat bigger ships.
"how close" depends on what you are approaching, for stations it's 1 Mm. But as you approach there is a display at the bottom left showing your speed and distance from the target as well as in what range you can drop out. If both parameters are met there is also a prompt saying "press XYZ do drop out of super cruise". It's really not hard, the biggest issue is being too fast. But if you do what Stelar Seven said your speed will be fine.
There is quite a bit of potential for optimization which can save a lot of time (e.g. a bit more than 75% speed is usually also ok, or a bit later than at 7 seconds), but if you overdo it you'll do "the loop of shame". The loop of shame is the loop you have to do because you flew past your target because you were too fast and couldn't drop out of supercruise.
And there is an (imo) funny gimmick the developers added to make fun of you: When you are too fast, even setting your throttle to 0 won't help, and even though you want to go slower it sounds like your accellerting. You (or at least i) always get the feeling "No! Brake! don't accellerate you stupid ship!" It only sounds like it though.
i get so confused with the speeds tho, Ls is light speed i think, not sure what Mm is i think there are a couple others ive seen also, i might try this super cruise trick in a training course till i know what im doing
thank you ever so much :)
Mm is mega meter. So million meters or thousand kilometers.
Ly is light year. 9.4607 × 10^12 km
When your speed gets near or past light speed you will see it listed as #.# c
I've had a ship up to 900 and some while flying between stars in a binary system.
