Just mine, or to be more accurate refine, 500 tons of mined ore. Doesn't matter which type of ore/asteroid, but as the second part of Selene Jeans requirement are 10 tons of Painite, I would recommend to include at least that 10 tons in the ore mining process.

When you mine (both core mining and laser mining) you break off chunks of stuff. These chunks get refined by a refinery (module must be equipped) in to tons or units of cargo. These mined
and refined units/tons of material is what is being counted for the unlock. Sometimes it takes multiple chunks to equal one ton/unit of a mined material.

For the unlock it does not matter what you mine. You could mine water, or gold or whatever so long as it gets pulled out of an asteroid, collected, and refined.

Yep, it's "vague" because it's open and general: you can mine whatever you like. So long as it gets collected and processed in a refinery, it counts.

Exploity tip: Selene Jean just wants to know you can "refine" stuff; she doesn't care what you do with the refined stuff afterwards. You don't have to fly back tot he station to sell the stuff once you've got a full hold, if you don't want to. So for maximum time-efficiency, simply jettison everything you mine and refine. Except for the painite; after you refine the 500 tonnes of ore, she'll tell you she wants 10 tonnes of painite from you, so keep any painite which you happen to find while on your way to 500.

Before this thread gets necro locked- for anyone who sees this and is grinding Selene Jean:

Do Core/Subsurface deposit mining with a pulse scanner and the relevant tools, and laser mine them after. Do not do pure laser mining on random asteroids thinking it will be faster by collecting random ice / water / iron. For every 6 asteroids you mine with that method you can get almost twice that in raw units refined from core / rich asteroids, regardless of the ore value.
